About the Author

Maryvonne Lumley, UWL,James Wilkinson

Maryvonne Lumley: Maryvonne lectures in employability related subjects to both full time and employed, part time students in the International Business School at the University of West London. Her extensive commercial experience, which has included recently overseeing an Investors in People project, gives her firsthand insights into current working practices and business perspectives on the employment market for graduates. This wealth of practical knowledge is supported by theoretical understanding achieved through her MSc in Human Computer Interaction and MA in Psychology of Education.


James Wilkinson: Currently on sabbatical while he writes this textbook, James has taught in both a teaching focused university and at a research intensive institution. As a Teaching Fellow in Higher Education at King's College London, he has supported early career teachers and refined his 'Combined Learning for Employability and Research (CLEAR)' pedagogical approach. Prior to this, as a Senior Lecturer at the University of West London, James participated in and provided leadership for numerous employability-related research and curriculum development projects, and also led an international, EU-funded project which developed a new module and pedagogical approach for developing intercultural communication competence. In 2010 he was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the UK Higher Education Academy.

Exceptionally clear and accessible

A gem of a book - the first section on research philosophies alone makes it worth reading. The authors write with exceptional clarity of subjects that are often difficult to grasp if not already well versed in research philosophy. Excellent advice on methodology as well - for graduate students such as myself, who might be struggling with methodological issues and who might be having difficulty writing the methodology / analysis chapters of their dissertations, I highly recommend seeking out this book.

Comprehensive, useful, thoughtful

Many books look useful but then when you really need guidance they fall apart. This book not only looks useful, it IS a useful guide to know what to do, when, and how. In fact, I found that it was the most useful book in qualitative research available on the market. It's a bit pricy but it's worth it.

Kertzer, who died in 1984, wrote the first edition of this book in 1953. He revised it three times, most recently in 1978. Now his nephew, also a rabbi and professor at the Hebrew Union College, has revised the book again. Originally intended to "guide non-Jews to a better understanding of their fellow Jewish Americans" as well as to "enable Jews themselves to rediscover forgotten roots of tradition and belief," the book still serves this purpose admirably, addressing all of the traditional questions: What in general do Jews believe? What are Orthodox Jews? What is Torah? Also addressed are newer concerns: What is the Jewish attitude toward feminism? According to Judaism, do animals have rights? Why do Jews persist in remembering the Holocaust? About half the material in this revised edition is new; the entire book is written from a calmly instructional, nonevangelical viewpoint and in an engaging style that will appeal to young people and old, Jews and non-Jews. Highly recommended for all public and school libraries.

Really neat introduction!

Some books on religion give a warm fuzzy feeling - others give a lot of detailed information. This work is definitely in category two! In a question-response format (114 of each), this volume manages to cover almost anything one would want to know about Judaism. Originally written by the late Rabbi Morris N. Kertner, his nephew Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman has updated it. ("What Is a Jew" was first published in 1953, and has gone through three revisions, and countless reprints.) A new feature I found very useful in this revised edition is its transliteration of Hebrew words -- abundant in this work -- as they occur, together with their meanings. The 148 Hebrew (and occasionally Yiddish or Aramaic) terms used throughout the text are brought together in a glossary at the end of the volume, too. ---- Though this book is written from a "middle of the road" Jewish perspective, it carefully points out the differences between the four contemporary major divisions of Judaism (Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, and Reconstructionist schools). "What Is a Jew" also gives fair treatment to the Chasidim (Hassidim), and such historical schools as the Sadducees, Pharisees, Mitnagdim, and others. To give an idea of the range of questions covered in this paperback, here is a brief sample: "Who Were `The Rabbis'?"; "What is Halachah?"; "Is There a Priesthood in Judaism?"; "Do Jews Believe Literally in Satan?"; "According to Judaism, Do Animals Have Rights?"; "What is the Difference Between A Synagogue, a Shul, and A Temple?"; Why Do Some Jews Keep Only One Day of a Holy Day, While Others Keep Two?"; and "What Is the Jewish Attitude Toward Divorce?"; "Does Judaism Accept Converts?", and many other equally interesting topics. ---- I believe that whoever masters the contents of this fascinating volume will be well on his/her way to a fascinating voyage of discovery. Any non-Jew (like myself) who has ever been invited to a Bar Mitzvah, and has come out of the synagogue laden with questions, will find his/her journey out of ignorance a pleasant and rewarding one! This is as good a guide as I have been able to find...

Excellent book on Judaism

This is the best book I've found that provides an overview of Judaism. Its intention is to inform and provide understanding without needless bias or judgment. I read Harold Kushner's To Life! prior to What is a Jew? and was disappointed. His Conservative bias is obvious and gets in the way of his ability to present an overall understanding of Judaism. I don't get that sense at all with What is a Jew? Rabbi Kertzer and Rabbi Hoffman willingly present all the ways Judaism has come to be interpreted and practiced. They may analyze and draw conclusions, but it is done to help understanding, not to promote their own opinions or to judge others.
This book is a refreshing approach to a difficult topic, filled with wisdom and insight.

Mentoring is investing in PEOPLE

I honestly thought this book would provide some practical tips on teaching others. It certainly does that, but much more. This book is not some list of quick tips on how to be a better teacher. Instead, it's a plea to pour out your life for the benefit of OTHERS. My whole notion of a "mentor" was totally changed after reading this book.

Dr Davis suggests that the job of a true mentor is to invest in people. Mentors are "not to produce great men and women, but rather to energize ordinary men and women to be greatly motivated for the cause of Jesus Christ."

To cite just one example of practical advice found here: Ron advises the prospective mentor to become an AFFIRMER, as opposed to a strict EVALUATOR. We need to build-up those we counsel, rather than tear them down. Mentoring is investing in people.

I especially appreciated the touching examples of the author's father and brother--both who lived the lives of meaningful mentors to those in their paths.

To those who think that mentoring might be a real ego booster, Ron has some startling news: The Godly mentor doesn't seek his or her own glory. Quite the opposite, in fact. Mentoring, the Biblical way, is a "thankless, unattractive, unpretentious calling."

I highly recommend this serious and thought-provoking work by Dr. Ron Lee Davis.

About the Author

Tony Gaddis is the principal author of the Starting Out with series of textbooks. He has nearly two decades of experience teaching computer science courses, primarily at Haywood Community College. Tony is a highly acclaimed instructor who was previously selected as the North Carolina Community College Teacher of the Year, and has received the Teaching Excellence award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development. The Starting Out with series includes introductory textbooks covering Programming Logic and Design, Alice, C++, Java, Microsoft Visual Basic, and Python.

Book Content is Good But Necessary Companion Website Missing

I've been studying from this textbook for a community college class where we are using Java to do our programming assignments for over 2 weeks now. I like the book, as I liked this author's C++ text. The author teaches introductory material well. I like the questions he includes - both his checkpoint questions throughout the chapter and his end of chapter questions as well.

There are a number of appendices that the author wrote for the book, which are referred to as going up to 'L'. Unfortunately only appendix A is actually in the book. The rest are referred to as being on the web.

I found a reference on the Pearson website saying they were expected to be there by Aug 25 and today is September 5/2011. I really use these appendices. (Yes, I wrote to Pearson - no acknowledgement of my first email. I sent a second today)

Before you buy this book, check the Pearson site and make sure all the content is there. I'm sure you will be happy with it once the publisher completes the publication.

Good book but verbose

This book has clear, understandable examples and plenty of exercises, but uses too many words.

After a while I no longer bother to read the text. Most of the example programs are well-documented and self-explanatory. I then study the key terms and concepts. Then I look up and memorize answers to the questions. Finally I study the odd-numbered programming challenges' source code before attempting even-numbered problems myself. The answers and source codes are available on Chegg.

Be sure to type source codes yourself and understand everything you type, whether it is examples or your own programs.

Excellent for beginners, but its a little long winded

I really enjoyed this book. The depth of detail the authors go into in each chapter is unlike any other programming book I've come across. The authors do a good job of creating multiple situations and providing numerous examples. Anyone who is new to programming or object-oriented languages will benefit from this book. The problems they provide at the end of each chapter are good also.

My biggest gripe would be the length of each chapter. Each chapter averages about ~50 pages. The reason is that the authors include some subjects that would of been better suited for a later chapter. For example, they introduce the very basics of JOption in the beginning chapters, then come back to it in more detail six or seven chapters later. They really could of just left that out and or briefly mentioned in the earlier chapters.
