I also bought this book after seeing it in UnofficialSquaw.com's G.N.A.R. movie. This book is well written, easy to understand, and even provides great pictures to help you rip up Squaw's terrain. Even if you are not planning on shredding the lines in this book; there is enough to read for everyone to be entertained. Shane McConkey's bonus chapter in the end is enough to make this book worth buying. A must for anyone who wants to see what Squaw really has to offer.

About the Author
Prof. Dr. Thomas Risse is director of the Center for Transnational Relations, Foreign and Se-curity Policy at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science at the Freie Universität Berlin. Born in 1955, he received his PhD. from the University of Frankfurt in 1987. From 1997-2001, he was Joint Chair of International Relations at the European University Institute's Ro-bert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Department of Social and Political Sci-ences in Florence, Italy. His previous teaching and research appointments include the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt, the University of Konstanz, Germany, as well as Cornell and Yale Universities, and the University of Wyoming. He has also held visiting professorships at Stanford and Harvard Universities. Thomas Risse is co-ordinator of the Research Center 700 "Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is founding director of the Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies, and has been chair of the Executive Committee of the Joint Master program in International Relations of the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, and the University of Potsdam. He has been asso-ciate editor of the journal International Organization. In 2003, he received the Max Planck Research Prize for International Cooperation. Thomas Risse is the author of Cooperation among Democracies. The European Influence on U.S. Foreign Policy (Princeton University Press, 1995) and, among others, co-editor of The End of the West. Domestic Sources of Foreign Economic Policy During the Interwar Years, 1924-1939 (1995), and is currently working on a book length manuscript on compliance with international human rights obligations. She is a co-editor of the SAGE Handbook of International Relations (2002).

President Barack Obama’s mother, S. Ann Dunham, was an economic anthropologist and rural development consultant who worked in several countries including Indonesia. Dunham received her doctorate in 1992. She died in 1995, at the age of 52, before having the opportunity to revise her dissertation for publication, as she had planned. Dunham’s dissertation adviser Alice G. Dewey and her fellow graduate student Nancy I. Cooper undertook the revisions at the request of Dunham’s daughter, Maya Soetoro-Ng. The result is Surviving against the Odds, a book based on Dunham’s research over a period of fourteen years among the rural metalworkers of Java, the island home to nearly half Indonesia’s population. Surviving against the Odds reflects Dunham’s commitment to helping small-scale village industries survive; her pragmatic, non-ideological approach to research and problem solving; and her impressive command of history, economic data, and development policy. Along with photographs of Dunham, the book includes many pictures taken by her in Indonesia.

After Dunham married Lolo Soetoro in 1967, she and her six-year-old son, Barack Obama, moved from Hawai‘i to Soetoro’s home in Jakarta, where Maya Soetoro was born three years later. Barack returned to Hawai‘i to attend school in 1971. Dedicated to Dunham’s mother Madelyn, her adviser Alice, and “Barack and Maya, who seldom complained when their mother was in the field,” Surviving against the Odds centers on the metalworking industries in the Javanese village of Kajar. Focusing attention on the small rural industries overlooked by many scholars, Dunham argued that wet-rice cultivation was not the only viable economic activity in rural Southeast Asia.

Surviving against the Odds includes a preface by the editors, Alice G. Dewey and Nancy I. Cooper, and a foreword by her daughter Maya Soetoro-Ng, each of which discusses Dunham and her career. In his afterword, the anthropologist and Indonesianist Robert W. Hefner explores the content of Surviving against the Odds, its relation to anthropology when it was researched and written, and its continuing relevance today.

Great intro to PHP

I found this easy to follow, and it covers the key concepts without getting bogged down in unnecessary stuff.

I've had a few goes at getting to grips with PHP but never got very far. This has given me a good start with the simple exercises to follow. Plus it gives good ideas for building on the exercises and extend my knowledge.

And the examples and exercises are user-friendly and amusing in places!

The book turned this PHP beginner into a fast learner.

This is the leanest, most efficient introduction to PHP that you're likely to find. Docherty doesn't waste a word. The title promises to teach you the fundamentals in only 24 hours. It did the job for me in 4 hours, but then I have some programming experience in other languages. If you're an utter noobie, you'll likely need more time than me, but probably not that much more. Studying the book between football games on a weekend should do it.

I said the book is lean, but it is the opposite of mean. Docherty is the rare writer who is both an expert developer and a sympathetic teacher. Everything is laid out in the simplest possible language. Everything connects with everything else. There are a ton of practical examples that clarify concepts.

You begin coding PHP within minutes of opening the book. By the time you finish, you've created working programs that are actually useful, among them an email processor, a program that generates passwords, and routines that process HTML forms. In addition to appearing throughout the book, the code examples are available for download at the author's website if you've purchased the book.

As I worked my way through the lessons, I never got into my familiar WTF mode. There are concepts that seem as if they might be a little gnarly without an instructor who knows his stuff. These would include installing software, working with associative arrays, debugging, and working with MySql. But surprise—they were a breeze.

Most of all, I appreciate the book for its ability to instill confidence in me. I think it's natural to approach any new programming language with some trepidation. But good teaching can mitigate the fear. And in the end, nothing builds confidence like knowing that you've learned what you set out to learn.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who's ready to learn PHP and prefers to make the learning process as easy as possible.

A celebration of vernacular architecture with earthquake resistance

The first thing that strikes you about this book is the stunning colour photographs that highlight why the two housing types focused upon are so worthy of preservation. These houses possess a richness of materiality (masonry, stone and wood), colours and structural patterns that are of another world (Kashmir).

Not only are Taq and Dhajji Dewari buildings of great aesthetic, cultural and historic interest, they also happen to perform well during earthquakes - out performing (poorly built) modern reinforced concrete structures. Taq construction consists of timber-laced masonry bearing-walls while Dhajji Dewari's structure comprises timber frame with infill masonry.

After describing the two types of construction, basic material about how buildings resist earthquake shaking is provided to prepare the reader for more detailed explorations of how these ancient systems perform relatively well during earthquakes. Due to their structural complexity advanced structural analysis has yet to reveal the secret of their seismic success although the likely reasons are offered.

Repair and strengthening issues are dwelt with in some detail and lavishly illustrated before the concluding section which discusses the seismic vulnerability of contemporary construction. The case is then made for the conservation and vitalization of these traditional buildings.

This book is essential reading for builders and designers (architects and engineers) working in the Kasmir region and fascinating and informative for any others interested in vernacular architecture, particularly in seismic areas.

All is not lost

This excellently presented, well illustrated and rationally formed book satisfies both the need for a description of vernacular structures in Kashmir and region, and also offers solutions to the often seemingly insurmountable problems facing those responsible for the restoration of damaged houses post earthquake and from many other causes of damage.

The pointers to disaster reduction described in "Don't Tear it Down" carefully inform and open valuable windows on a worldwide problem which allows for the preservation of disappearing built heritage and perhaps more importantly the less tangible culture that lies behind it.

The many illustrations are immensely informative, demonstrating little known and less published architectural forms and explaining types of damage in great detail.

The best book around on the subject

I have tended to be frustrated with the books available on fMRI, which have all been in the format of edited chapters by an wide array of authors. While that format would seem to have the advantage that the leading experts on a particular area are presenting the material they know best, in effect it causes a disjointed text that is hard to follow.
In contrast, this book was written entirely by a single author who has a style that is clear and easy to follow. I wouldn't say that Buxton's writing is conversational, but he does a good job of making the wide range of topics (both physical and physiological) accessible without using over-simplifications or backing off from the current controversies in the field. Another strength of the book is that he gives considerable treatment to alternative methods (such as perfusion, diffusion and tracer methods) which have been slighted in other texts to include yet another chapter on 3T vs 4T.

Solid explanations of some important concepts

(Disclaimer: I know and like Rick, but I'm trying to be objective regardless!)

So I've owned this book since it was first out. I didn't look at the first edition that much, but I've found that in the past year or so the second edition has become progressively more useful to me. (I think it's just the timing, it's nothing to do with the 2nd edition per se.) It is an introductory text, but not perhaps in the way most people would expect: as a laundry list of terms and their explanations that can be used like a dictionary. Instead, this is a book that needs to be read. And that's why I think I've found it more useful of late. If I am looking for a solid description of a particular phenomenon and it's covered in the book then it's usually an elegant explanation. Indeed, my biggest complaint is that there aren't more sections on more topics!

I don't think there is a single introductory text that fully covers fMRI, whether it's for the acquisition, the data processing, the experimental design or what have you. But this text is definitely a very useful member of a small set of useful introductions, most prominent amongst which I would put the intro text by Huettel, Song and McCarthy. HSM is a radically different approach to fMRI than Buxton; I wouldn't be without the pair of them.

In sum, it's thorough, very well written, readable for someone with a modicum of background knowledge. If you're transitioning from another area of NMR or MRI, or you've just taken an intro MRI/fMRI course (and you understood most of it!) then you should find this text useful.
