About the Author
After ground-breaking work as a scholar and literary critic, Frank Lentricchia changed his focus to fiction in the 1980s. Since then he has written a number of novels exploring the complexities of ethnic and artistic identity, mostly set in his home town of Utica, New York, where he was born to working-class parents.

This is simply a great and complex story in a little town that has ...

Full disclosure: I grew up in the very neighborhood that is the scene of this and other Elliot Conte novels. Lentricchia is a legend around these parts and he never disappoints. Utica is not just another little city. It is charmingly ethnic and the warmth comes to life in the Italian and Lebanese cafes, where the old guys hang out. It has always been diverse and we see numerous Bosnian Muslims, Russians and Latinos find their way into Conte's world. But Utica is also dark, filled with secrets, relatives who have disappeared, uncles who went away for three to five, unsolved murders, official corruption as a major industry. The Morelli Thing has it all. This is simply a great and complex story in a little town that has so many stories. Great stuff.

Okay, definitely held my interest

Okay, this was a different one for me. There were so many characters and so many of them were almost alike that I kept getting them confused - Morelli and Moretti - one was dead and one was not. That was a huge difference Ha! I chuckled a few times. I was kept interested, why I don't know. I guess it was just so crazy that I just had to stick with it just to see what this bunch of Italian guys were actually talking about. Bestseller it was not, but I can see how some people would like it.

For me, it was just okay.

Henry Chalfant is a photographer and videographer most notable for his work on graffiti, breakdance, and hip-hop culture.

James Prigoff (born October 29, 1927) is an American photographer, author, and lecturer focusing on public murals, graffiti, and spraycan art. A Seminal Reference Book

I have just replaced my tattered copy of the seminal five star "Spraycan Art" book. This was the first and only book to follow graffiti art out of the NYC subways and around the world. Not only did the book name the art form, but the authors obviously knew and found the key writers of their time. Witness the visionary choice of Mode 2, age 15, on the cover. ....Thirteen years after being first printed, this book is still a vital reference for all of us who are interested in the graffiti aspect of Hip-Hop. I, for one, am grateful that Chalfant and Prigoff were willing to spend the enormous time and effort that was obviously necessary to capture this historic period on film, give voice to the writers through the interview process, and to make available important historic information.

A work of major significance

As a public art historian, I recently revisited Spraycan Art. I am told that the sales on this book are approaching 200,000 copies. In 1987 it was the first look at the art form as it traveled out of the NYC subways and around the world and although writers today are more sophisticated with their mastery of the spray can and the imagery they create, the book is still very current in its look at the graffiti world and its place in the Hip Hop scene. It is remarkable to me how Chalfant and Prigoff came to know the key writers of those years, both nationally and internationally. Their contribution to the graf world as professional documentary photographers, authors and resource people has withstood the test of time. It is a must read for current writers, historians or just anyone interested in a unique art form created by youth. Interesting that the book named the art for all time.

There are various approaches for describing highly nonlinear phenomena like self-induced waveguides. One is formal and lacks intuition. This approach is to solve Maxwell's equations from the outset with an intensity-dependent refractive index, completely ignoring the physics of the earlier chapters. The other approach is to build on our earlier chapters, by recognising that a light indued waveguide is a waveguide just like those we have already studied; the only difference being that its refractive index (and hence its V value) is now dependent on the intensity of light.

I love this book, but the information is hard to use

This is one of the best books I've seen that address building architectural design considerations that affect heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting. It presents tidbits from real designs, focuses on maximizing the effects of the local climate on the building toward the objective of a comfortable and usable living/working space, and addresses supplemental systems as well. This information presumes a level of knowledge relating to some of these concepts that I don't currently have, making it a pretty hard read in many places. However, the book digs pretty deep into each area, providing enough information to get a good start on a building design. The fusion of engineering and creativity is my favorite feature of this book. It provides insight into creative building designs while also presenting the more quantitative factors necessary to size and evaluate a design for intended use.

Still trying to adapt to the new interface of this book , the diagrams that denote the design strategies are very very small, .
i cannot make a good evaluation at the moment as i am still trying to understand the book.
How ever at first glance it seems to give a lot of insight on sustainable strategies . the book build feels very delicate but the steel ring allows for complete 180 deg page flipping.

This is a true story: In late 2007, I was in the E.R. with a lab result of “undetectable blood.” In the days that followed, I contracted aspiration pneumonia, sepsis, and was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). This required a stem-cell transplant that led to graft-versus-host disease (GVH). My skin and fingernails fell off, I had trouble walking and needed a wheelchair, I developed achalasia of the stomach where the stomach sphincter muscle tightens and causes an inability to swallow food, and I was on a feeding tube for a year. I went blind in one eye and could hardly see in the other. I acquired cricopharyngeal achalasia where the throat closes, and it is hard to swallow. On top of this, I went insane for two and a half years… but that is not the real story. This is not just a story about living and dying multiple times or recovering from the medical problems listed above. It is, as well, a story about the inspirational voices of Nature (they are called Daemons), an ancient Egyptian priest, ancient protection dogs called Tesems, a Native American Medicine man, personal electromagnetic frequency resonance fields, and a doorway into a new reality that Nature has just opened. It is also about what the effects of the Fukushima nuclear disaster are doing to the food supply and why the fruits and vegetables are becoming sick with new and devastating illnesses. The book describes a process that can take any Baby Boomer and make them 5 to 10 years younger, both physically and mentally. The story will lead readers to a new concept of where their emotions come from and explain why they are so like their parents. I provide readers with a way to change all this by paying off their ancestors’ debts. The journey ventures through the epigenetic Tar Pit and the Pitch Pit (my name for emotions imprinted into chemicals), into the House of Mirrors (where we reflect our emotions back at ourselves) and then through the Looking Glass (where the House of Mirrors is shattered) to another world of freedom that exists here and now. This story has never been told before because Nature has just created it.

Very intersesting read.

I sense some large truths in this well written and good read book. My one complaint is the absence of the specific modalities used in some of the treatments.. the author needs a website,I think. Please make it easy to find you for further information... (!)

Enough of a Challenge and Plenty of Inspiration

I bought this book because I used to make origami llamas years ago and had long forgotten. After an exhaustive search, this was the only book I could find with instructions for a llama. In that respect, I'd say this book met my expectations.
Most of the instructions are intermediate and can be constructed in a few minutes. They are challenging enough that you feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment upon finishing an animal.
Something that other reviewers may overlook is that this book provides wonderful inspiration for creating your own origami animals. Many animals start out from a base that you could branch off from to create tigers, dolphins, moose, etc.

This is by far my LEAST favorite Montroll book. It is basically a collection of animals that he has either previously or since done much better! I own almost all of his books, and I would not recommend this one to any other person that has most of his books. However, the 3 star rating may be unfair, because I am comparing this book to the rest of Montrolls. I think, compared to most other origami animal books, this one would still rank near the top, but not after people discover Montroll's better books (North American Animals, African Animals, etc.)
