The First Book in the Sweet Pickles Series

"Who Stole Alligator's Shoe?" is the first in the timeless children's series, Sweet Pickles. These stories are not your typical children's fare. They teach a lesson within each book, but the lesson does nothing to lessen your children's love of the tale. I first read these to my children and now I am reading them to my grandchildren. I would highly recommend these to anyone with a child who loves being read to.

My parents ordered these for me when I was a kid and I am sure that I had every one while I was growing up. I have such fond memories of them from reading them over and over again.

I wanted the same thing for my kids so I am on a quest to get them all back in my family library.

About the Author
Richard Garber, AIA, is an Associate Professor at the College of Architecture and Design of the New Jersey Institute of Technology and partner in the New York City-based fi rm GRO Architects. His teaching and professional work uses computer simulation and computer numerically controlled (CNC) hardware to generate innovative design, construction and assembly solutions. Current work includes a series of modular housing projects in Jersey City, New Jersey and Baltimore, Maryland; and a community plan for the Zhangdu Lake region of Wuhan, China. He was previously a project manager at SHoP Architects and at Greg Lynn FORM. He holds architecture degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Columbia University.

ASTONISHLINGLY WONDERFUL BIM GUIDE!!

Are you an architectural designer? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Richard Garber, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that takes a different track from others, in that it does not presuppose that everything the designer needs exists in a library stored within the BIM software.

Author Garber, begins by introducing you to information modeling technology: Specifically technologies that are used to support architectural design; which has developed to a point where it is flexible enough to be engaged within the intuitive design strategies that foster novelty. In addition, he explains that perhaps the most interesting similarity between the master builder and the architect using information modeling technologies today, is the expanded field of knowledge required when the responsibilities of building fall on the designer. The author also goes on to explain that schematic design is concerned generally with the determination of large-scale design organization and the development of architectural plans, while design development takes this work further with the production of exterior and interior elevations, determination of large-scale building systems and preliminary coordination with consultants, such as structural and mechanical engineers. Then, he continues by discussing that perhaps the most interesting aspect of information modeling as a new paradigm that replaces both construction documents and shop drawings, is the way you as a designer, confronts abstraction. The author then explains that implied in the development of an information model, is the ability for the designer to work iteratively, which is, working through repetition with a difference on the development of a design. Next, he discusses that generally, library products and symbols will contain information that built-up geometry will not: Such as cost information, material specifications and assembly instruction. In addition, the author defines an assembly as a series of components that are each linked to the assembly file, in the same manner that a series of CAD drawings can be referenced into a single file. Finally, he states that the adoption and creative use of BIM will ultimately have an impact on the state of future design practices.

As the author of this excellent book argues, and the examples that he shows suggest, it is possible to use BIM technologies to the full, with all of the advantages they entail, and still remain faithful to the traditional notion of design. The author also suggests in this great book, that today's digital tools expand, rather than constrain, the authorial ambit of architectural design.

Going to France to enjoy yourself? You need this book!

When I first moved to Paris, I could barely speak a word of French (and had no job, and nowhere to stay, but that's another story), apart from a heavily-accented "une baguette de pain s'il vous plait Madame". And I can honestly say that this book was THE most useful thing I read -- indeed, it's the only book I pored over and learnt sections of by heart. Yes, speaking proper sentences and being polite and all that is all very useful, but if you really want to enjoy yourself, and get on with the locals, then this is the motherlode. Even if you only know two words of French, slipping a few well-chosen words like "bagnole", "boulot", and "flingue" (and the choicer swear words) into your conversation will break the ice, and impress your hosts, a LOT more than knowing the subjective pluperfect ever could. I eventually took "proper" French lessons at the Sorbonne, and had many arguments with my teacher about the relative merits of "correct" and "colloquial" French. For me, learning a language is about communicating, not about grammar, and this is the perfect place to start. To this day, I make sure that none of my friends or colleagues goes off to France for any period of time without a copy of this under their arm...

Un truc d' ouf!

Despite some serious misgivings about perhaps in some way contributing to the sin of French slang spoken with an American accent, I must nevertheless praise Genevieve for her entertaining "p'tit bouquin." From my close contact with the Frenchies I've noticed that two ways to make an impression are: (1) achieve a perfect French accent, and (2) (easier) learn some slang. Even people fluent in school-taught French, who have read Moliere, Balzac and Proust in the original, cannot and will not understand much in French Films, TV etc. without a basic knowledge of French slang. It is much more present than in American English or in German. From the few books on this topic that I've come across, Genevieve's remains the best. She covers all the basics and throws in some witty remarks on French culture as well. Of course, one must first have a good background in French in order to eventually use the expressions here, especially since phonetic pronuciations are not given; without a certain level of proficiency one runs the risk of sounding like a foreign fool. But this book is also good precisely for figuring out when you've been called a fool (or something worse!) For those interested in expressions past the essentials, check out her other book: Merde Encore.

This book is an excellent source of words and expressions, of varying degrees of vulgarity, that are used all the time by french speakers. I used it often during the first of my two years in France. Its real value is not for those in French 101 but for those who already speak decent french and want to learn the expressions used every day by the young and some of the french media (magazines, movies etc). Translated literally many of these words might seem offensive (e.g., connard, encule, putain), yet as the book points out, many times these are the phrases you hear the most in the metro or cafes of France. It is important to realize that even though these words do not carry the same force as their English translations, one must still pay attention to the social context in order to aviod disrespectful "faux pas"!

I took the quizzes myself. I usually got most of them right but I never got all of them right. A few had me stumped until I looked up the answer. I found the grading system to be fair, in ratings of Master, Club Player and Average. I strongly recommend that every chess player go through all 300 problems.

About the Author
This is an early Reinfeld work from 1945 before he became famous. Fred Reinfeld was born on January 27, 1910. Although Fred Reinfeld is now remembered as a writer about chess and other subjects, he was also a strong player. In the 1950 USCF Rating List he was rated number 6 in the United States with a rating of 2593. He defeated Reshevsky twice and Fine once in tournament games and drew World Champion Alekhine in the grandmaster tournament in Pasadena 1932, the strongest tournament ever played in the Western United States. In Pasadena 1932, the strongest grandmaster tournament in the USA in the decade of the 1930s, Fine and Reinfeld both got the same score of 5-6. Fine won their individual game. However, Reinfeld did better against the higher ranked players, including a win over Reshevsky and a draw with World Chess Champion Alexander Alekhine. Final scores were: Alekhine 8.5-2.5, Kashdan 7.5-3.5, Dake, Steiner and Reshevsky 6-5, Borochow 5.5-5.5, Reinfeld, Bernstein, Fine and Factor 5-6, Araiza 3.5-7.5, and Fink 3-8. After that however Reinfeld only played in a few other chess events. He spent the rest of his life writing about the game, not playing it. Reinfeld wrote more than one hundred chess books. In his day, almost all young chess players started off on his books. Nowadays, his books are mostly out of print because they were written in descriptive notation, as this one is. Fred Reinfeld died on May 29, 1964.

Practical and thourough solutions to Data Analysis in Excel/Tabular SSAS

Whether you are a new Excel user, an experienced Excel Analyst or a seasoned SQL Server Business Intelligence developer, you will want this book in your reference collection. The patterns covered are ones that you will run into and need a solution for if you spend any amount of time developing solutions using PowerPivot or SQL Server Tabular Analysis Services. The explanations and recipes are thorough, starting with the basic pattern and then building up to the optimum solution for each problem. I personally have leveraged Marco's training and Design Patterns to great effect in my consulting practice and can vouch for the quality of any of the books that Marco and Alberto have published.
Topic covered include the basics of the DAX language, Time Intelligence & Time Patterns, Cumulative Totals, Related Distinct Count, Statistical Patterns, Parameter Tables, Static Segmentation, Dynamic Segmentation, ABC Classification, Handling Different Granularities, Budget Patterns, Surveys, Basket Analysis, New and Returning Customers and Parent-Child Hierarchies.

The Kindle version of the book could use a table of contents, but that lack is made up by one being available on the books website, where you can also download full working examples of all of the patterns. Good Material- but very Glitchy Kindle Download for me

This book has been downloaded twice by me and I am having great trouble using it. I have re-downloaded the Kindle software to my Surface Pro 3 Windows 8 with no improvement. There are huge sections of the book- beginning with Chapter 3 that are either blank pages OR the words appear in a column only ONE character wide. Usually there are two columns on a page - in the usual column format- BUT..... try reading a sentence where every letter is above the next- 3 words on a page. What parts of the book I have gone thru are EXACTLY what I wanted- good visuals of how these DAX formulas are put together and how they work. The associated files that accompany the book are good- BUT very tedious to get. Rather than just download a zip file with the files you will need- each one must be sought out and each one appears - not at the top of a web page discussion of same topic but at the bottom of a 2nd column that won't move until you get to the bottom of the 1st column. There are supposed to be links in each chapter to the file you need but as I said- so many chapters are garbled I only found one link. If these glitches can get cleaned up- this book would appear to me- based on what I have seen to be a great value for the $$. This book is a must have for any person who is a seer or feeler and is often overwhelmed with their gifting! Helps you discern and manage the gift properly and put what you see/feel into perspective in your life! GREAT BOOK!

A lot of depth to the topic of Burden Bearing- I recommend

I recommend this book for those who are both new to BB and those who have 'lived with it' for decades, like me, want to understand more about this gift. James is down to earth and uses metaphors (I prefer pc software than ships tbh as I know nothing of ships-lol) to help readers understand how BB gift operates. I especially like incidents that he shares where experiences have occurred which we wouldn't always recognise are related to BB. eg: feeling confused about directions when driving (an eye opener for me)

I hope James writes more in teh coming future to help us draw into the 'gift' and also to help us comprehend the intimacy that Jesus desires with His bride which I personally feel is the backbone of this gift.
