A little modest realism about what the aims of social research can be, and ought to be, rather than inflated claims and rhetoric in pursuit of what it hoped to be for so long, goes a long way, and makes for a book that will, I suspect, generate a spirit of optimism in those who fall for its down-to-earth charms… Above all, however, this is a book to enjoy―and for a text on method this is rare indeed. A different research methods book

This is an interesting and very different book about doing research. Let's start with some unequivocally positive points: it is beautifully written - not at all like a recipe book but rather a stroll with the author, in which she dispenses her wisdom, in the manner of craftsperson to apprentice. There's lots of anecdote and example and you get to feel that you know the author quite well by the end of the first chapter. She becomes a friend.

Or not, depending on your predilection in friends. In fact, I did like her, but I wouldn't want to spend more than a day in close company with her. (Rather like my parents in this respect.) She is assertive, has spent all her life in the academy, has a husband who went to Harvard, runs her doberman in the park - and she is pretty sure that she is right on most things, so there is a distinctly parental tone to the advice being given: a distict lack of diffidence - and JBS Haldane's 'duty of doubt' is nowhere in sight. This may be an unfair summary of what she is really like, but it's what comes over from the text. You may find the repeated use of the salsa dancing metaphor irritating and confusing. Confusing, because it is used in its literal sense (go out and salsa to get the neurons firing) and it is used as a proxy for interpretative research (a term that isn't used in the text at all, in fact). And paradoxically I felt that the book would be difficult for new doctoral researchers (to whom it is targetted). The thing about an apprentice is that you are standing next to the craftsperson, can watch and ask questions. By contrast, when things are presented in print in a loosely structured, narrative way it is difficult - unless you already have a lifetime of experience with which to contextualise the narrative - to know where on earth you are. I felt this at times with this book. I would recommend passages of brilliance to my doctoral students, but not the whole book.

And there is the question of whether one agrees in fact with what the author is saying about 'salsa dancing' (aka interpretative) research. This is pretty important. While she beautifully explains why the methods of what she calls 'canonical' social science are inadequate, she seems to fall for what Mouzelis has called a kind of 'crypto functionalism' in re-adopting its tenets in sampling and use of variables (for which the term 'elements' is substituted) and its goal in generalization. She can't explain the problem of generalization for case study, as she freely admits, suggesting that we have to substitute 'logical generalization' for 'statistical generalization' in the case study. I'm afraid I don't agree: you can't generalize at all from a case study and shouldn't expect to. What you can do is to explain one case with a freedom to look at it holistically, rather than in terms of variables or elements. In this sense, the author explains the debt we owe to Foucault near the beginning of the book, but then waves goodbye to him after the first couple of chapters. What case researchers have to do is immerse themselves in a subject or focus (the case) in such a way that they are able to explain it as a case of some kind of analytical frame (eg World War II as a case of a 'just war': WW2 is the case; the 'just war' is the analytical frame - this is what it is a case OF). I don't think readers would get this view of case study from this book. Rather, you will find an alternative way of doing what Luker calls 'canonical' social science. Maybe this is valid, but it's a very idiosyncratic way of viewing case research, and you won't find this acknowledged in the narrative, which is at times a little presumptive of its correctness as a way of doing non-'canonical' research. There are other ways of seeing issues holistically and doing the business of the research.

What is lovely in this book is the way that Luker, near the beginning of her book, discusses the framing of the research and the establishment of the research question, distinguishing it from the research interest. As she points out, this is something with which many students - no, the great majority of students - have difficulty. She comes up with some nice ideas such as the 'explanandum' (the thing being explained) and the 'explanans' (the explaining thing) as essential elements to a study. I would recommend this book just for this insight, though there is much more to be admired here. But it is a book for tutors, I feel, rather than students. Perhaps only 4 stars is unfair, but this is because the book doesn't really do what I think it set out to do - to wit, to talk to students. You need to understand what she is talking about to understand what she is talking about.

Worth reading for doctoral students when they are planning a dissertation

This is remarkably unboring for a methodology book. It also helped me enormously to calm down and write my dissertation proposal, which I just handed in. I'm very happy to have read it.

Other reviewers have some valid critiques-- there is a (too?) confident, parental tone, and the salsa metaphor doesn't work all that well if you don't like or know about salsa dancing. On the other hand, she really is trying to make a case for how to do research that is going to be acceptable to "the canonical social scientist" (which, at least in my sociology department, is most faculty members) and still let the data speak for itself.

In other words, if you're planning to do something qualitative, or if you want support for ideas that won't be immediately recognizable to established (quant-oriented) researchers as a legitimate project, DEFINITELY read this.

Even if you're super into quantitative methods and want some help working out your question in relation to theory, you should read it. Best 17 bucks I've spent this year.

This is a great book, the advice is to work smarter not harder. Easy to read and very helpful, it really is like salsa lessons for social researchers: learn one or two basic steps, find the right partner, focus on the rhythm of your research, and then... enjoy it!!!

selecting on the dependent variable

I don't have much to add to the other reviews here on the content, but as a couple of reviewers here have pointed out, there's a problem with the way they reached their conclusions. They chose a series of metrics as indicators of "excellence": they ranked companies on these metrics to identify a sample of "excellent companies": they then profiled these companies to find common features. Statisticians call this "selecting on the dependent variable": all excellent companies might have a certain feature, but you can only say that the feature has something to do with their excellence if non-excellent companies don't have it. The features that Peters picks out might be important, but the research they do doesn't in any way prove that.
There was a follow-up piece of research done some years later (not by the authors) in a paper called "excellence revisited", which argued that excellence was basically a temporary phenomenon, and that even these companies reverted to the mean. This looked at the "excellent companies" subsequent performance and found that on average, they had deteriorated significantly in all measures of performance. They then picked a sample of "non-excellent companies" using the same ranking criteria as the original book did at the time that the original research was done. Sure enough, these on average improved significantly in performance.

Management as Science

This publication is a survey written by a couple of McKinsey consultants that seek to define the characteristics of successful, I mean excellent, organizations using the McKinsey 7-S framework; Structure, Systems, Style, Staff, Skills, Strategy, and Shared Values.
Their findings suggest that eight attributes are common for an excellent organization; bias for action, close to the customer, autonomy and entrepreneurship, productivity through people, hands on, value driven, stick to the knitting (=focus on what you do best), simple form lean staff, and simultaneous loose-tight properties (balance between centralized/decentralized organization). This is it.
Although the authors have a pleasant narrative style and are eloquent in making their point, I hesitate to buy into the arguments presented, first and foremost because I question the all encompassing validity of the McKinsey 7-s approach. Secondly, the authors cite companies such as Digital and Wang as qualifying for excellency. Whatever these companies did during the eighties, it wasn't good enough in the end since their advantage was not sustained and hence I wouldn't call them excellent. Thirdly, the best before stamp is obvious.
I do find the introduction and management theory review very well written and enjoyable. Ironically, (for me) the authors find that chapter the least important part of the book. I beg to differ. Overall, this would make a good intro for those interested in management theory. While you're at it, try to also take a look at Michael Porter's and Peter Drucker's work. In my view they are the authority in the field.

Good from historical perspective, faulty in hind-sight

This book was the 1982 best-selling look at what were then excellent companies and an attempt to distill the eight attributes they had in common. It still ranks high as an important historical contribution, but two-thirds of the "excellent" companies disappeared, got acquired and disassembled, or went through extreme difficulties. Hindsight tells us the eight attributes were simply things those companies did well at the time, but were not the answer to longevity. In fact, at least five of the eight attributes appear to be detrimental now. However, this book is still a good read for those wishing to track the evolution of management thinking from at least early Drucker to the present.

Darnton's latest novel on scientific themes follows Hugh Kellem, an anthropologist whose study of Darwin's finches leads him to Cambridge, where, listlessly searching through Darwin's papers for a thesis topic, he stumbles upon a secret diary kept by Darwin's second daughter, Lizzie. Darnton interweaves Hugh's investigation with excerpts from Lizzie's writings and with flashbacks to Darwin's voyage aboard the Beagle. Both Darwin's daughter and the modern researcher become obsessed with the twenty-two-year gestation period between the voyage and Darwin's publication of his theory. The solution to the mystery manages to be not only fussily elaborate but fundamentally simplistic, and it involves too many dark hints and convenient coincidences. Still, Darnton has a good feel for both the Victorian era and the modern scientific milieu.

Can't Believe I Read the Whole Thing

As an award-winning reporter/journalist and bestselling novelist, John Darnton should be more than aware of this little axiom:

When penning a novel, make sure it is interesting to the reader.

Alas, there is little interesting in Darnton's latest effort. THE DARWIN CONSPIRACY is as bland as an empty ice cream cone; Darnton's historical narrative reminded me of the sports cliche "going through the motions." Nowhere--not at any time--did a character or plot jump out to grab me, or even pique my interest. As the book moved along the pages became heavier and heavier to turn.

Told from three points of view, this book has loads of potential. Two modern day historians are about to uncover a "shocking" revelation about Charles Darwin himself. . .a discovery that won't put the founder of evolution in a very favorable historical light. We also read about Darwin's voyage upon the "Beagle" in the 1830s, as young Charles must deal with a wacky ship captain and an intense scientific competitor. And finally, we are privy to the journals and letters of Darwin's daughter Lizzie; all three plots are intertwined, and it would be great if it worked, but it doesn't.

The modern day story is boring, its characters totally one-dimensional. Lizzie's contribution requires a suspension of disbelief from Pluto itself; historically depicted as "slow," this spinster daughter of Darwin's is presented here as a woman of uncanny intelligence--yet not intelligent enough to make good decisions while in the throes of passion. And Darwin's "Beagle" adventures. . .let's just say that the climatic scene--revealed in a ten-page letter from a teenage missionary (who writes like a forty-year-old, by the by) who was with Darwin and witnessed this amazing event on desolate Tierra del Fuego--is an absolute howler. I realize this is historical "fiction," but Darnton's zinger regarding who REALLY spawned the theory of natural selection is nothing more than sophomoric slurpiness.

THE DARWIN CONSPIRACY was extremely disappointing. Having read it, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. So I did both. And I still don't feel any better.

intriguing fictionalized account (based on known facts) of Darwin

Field anthropologist Hugh Kellem tries to solve several mysteries related to Darwin. Near Ecuador, the British researcher meets scientist Beth Dulcimer, who also seeks to understand why the famous naturalist took over twenty years to release the Origin of the Species and what happened to him that changed him from a confident scientist into a near anxious recluse.

Twentyish Darwin spends five years on the Beagle taking copious notes of what he observes on his journey and becomes increasingly confident in his abilities to do his job while a rival tries to usurp his findings. His notes serve as the basis of his classic Origin of Species by Natural Selection released in 1858. In the 1870s Darwin's youngest daughter Lizzie keeps a journal that show her growing concern about her father who seemingly over night changed from a vigorous person into a frightened shadow of himself. Hugh and Beth find Lizzie's diaries.

This interesting tale uses three points of view to tell a fictionalized account (based on known facts) of Darwin. The story opens with Hugh and Beth teaming up as both fixates over learning the mysteries of Darwin and on each other (that common obsession helps). The second (and by far the most interesting and intelligently designed) subplot follows Darwin's adventures from drinking with the Captain before leaving, to seasickness, to self-assured individual and finally struggling with a competitor. The final segue focuses on Lizzie's diary. Though well written, the present subplot seems unnecessary as it turns the life of Darwin into more of an academic mystery that includes a final shocking twist. While readers will enjoy sailing with Darwin and somewhat Lizzie's follow up in his later life, the present pales in comparison.

This elegant novel traces the life of Charles Darwin from childhood to his adventures on the "Beagle", his aging years, & spinning an entrancing story of mystery surrounding his voyage companions, his family & an attempt to define the time-line delays of two decades before publication of "The Origin of Species".

The story is told most cleverly in three voices: the passionate idyllic scholars Hugh Kellem & Beth Dulcimer: his daughter Lizzie (a.k.a. "Bessie" & Elizabeth), & Charles Darwin himself. Hugh & Beth have a titillating romance while researching for lost or archived correspondence on Darwin; Lissie secretly journals Papa Darwin's activities whilst Charles chronicles an early education, role as Beagle's Naturalist & his relationship with the crew, islanders, academic associates & family.

The read is extremely good -- suffice to say each of the 3 voices have their own affairs, trysts & difficulties but in the end there is a very satisfactory resolution of these unsettled goings on. Undoubtedly, some will be wont to obtain "Goblin Market" by Christina Rossetti to read "come buy our orchard fruits, come buy, come buy..." as overheard by Laura & Lizzie -- but that's another story.

This is the story of military aviation in Rhodesia from the romantic days of 'bush' flying in the 1920s and '30s-when aircraft were refueled from jerrycans and landing grounds were often the local golf course-to the disbandment of the Rhodesian Air Force (RhAF) on Zimbabwean independence in 1980. In 1939 the tiny Royal Rhodesian Air Force (RRAF) became the first to take up battle stations even before the outbreak of the Second World War. The three Rhodesian squadrons served with distinction in East Africa, the Western Desert, Italy and Western Europe. At home Rhodesia became a vast training ground for airmen from across the Empire-from Britain, the Commonwealth and even Greece.

After the war, Rhodesia, on a negligible budget, rebuilt its air force, equipping it with Ansons, Spitfires, Vampires, Canberras, Hunters and Alouettes. Following UDI, the unilateral declaration of independence from Britain in 1965, international sanctions were imposed, resulting in many remarkable and groundbreaking innovations, particularly in the way of ordnance. The bitter 'bush war' followed in the late 1960s and '70s, with the RhAF in the vanguard of local counterinsurgency operations and audacious preemptive strikes against vast guerrilla bases in neighboring Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana and as far afield as Angola and Tanzania. With its aging fleet, including C-47 'Dakotas' that had been at Arnhem, the RhAF was able to wreak untold havoc on the enemy, Mugabe's ZANLA and Nkomo's ZIPRA. The late author took over 30 years in writing this book; the result is a comprehensive record that reflects the pride, professionalism and dedication of what were some of the world's finest airmen of their time.

The late Beryl Salt was born in London in 1931. She emigrated to Southern Rhodesia in 1952 to get married in Salisbury, where her two sons were born. In 1953 she joined the Southern Rhodesian Broadcasting Services (later the Rhodesian Broadcasting Corporation, the RBC). She died in England in November 2001.

In this masterly work, Keith Stanovich provides an excellent and readable review of the literature on the psychology of decision making and the rationality debate that it has engendered. Beyond this, he conveys his own distinctive insights into the rationality of human behavior in the everyday world. Great, Interesting Text

This book was one of two texts used in a psychology class I took this semester entitled "Decision Theory." The topics covered in the text include concepts of rationality, decision making, rationality of action, Bayes Theorem, rationality of judgment, the rationality debate, dual reasoning processes, and metarationality.

I had never studied decision making and rationality before, and I must applaud Stanovich for the way that he approaches the material in the text. He clearly explains concepts, including support for and against them, "real life" applications, and research that has been done. He takes something that would otherwise appear very abstract and makes it much more understandable. He had useful charts and graphs to supplement the text, as well. His overall approach was very methodical and easy to follow. I especially appreciated his approach to Bayes Theorem.

For my psychology class, this text was excellent at explaining material, and it was a very nice addition to what we discussed in lecture. For a casual reader, I believe this text would be good to read. It really breaks down difficult subject matter into something that everyone can tackle. Additionally, the knowledge I have gained from this book has proved to be very useful to apply to my life!

Excellent book, but for the reader who is looking for aq more theoretical and analytical stance

This is an excellent overview of decision making, short rich and to the point. It is a bit different from other recent books in its stance. It looks at judgment and decision making in light of rationality i.e. how well adapted are our actions and our beliefs. If you've read Stanovich's book about the limitations of intelligences tests; the fact that these tests capture only part of what adaptive behavior, i.e. judgment and metacognitive skills you'll see the same orientation in this book. It is very different read when compared to Sheena Iyengar's book and shorter and more focused tan Kahneman's, Thinking fast, thinking slow ( both great books). The introduction introduces his approach to rationality. The next two chapters provide very good overviews of the traditional decision making model and its limitations and on judgment with a focus on departures from a Bayesian normative framework where he introduces research on the cognitive biases approach. The next two chapters put the decision making and judgment chapters in a broader perspective. The book ends with a chapter about metacognitive skills i.e. a decision making model takes the values and goals and give, re he talks about grappling with whether our values and goals to be re evaluated-- a level not much covered in introductory books. This may not be an easy read for some. If your are looking for a practical and easy introduction the Heath's book, Decisive would be an excellent place to start. Overall all-a theoretical yet excellent book.
