Lange Q & A Pediatrics
By Diverse Diva
This is a great question book to learn about & review Pediatrics.

Chapters covered in this book include:
1 Warm-up Questions and Exam-Taking Skills
2 General Pediatrics
3 The Neoanate
4 Growth & Development
5 Feeding & Nutrition
6 Fluids, Electrolytes and Metabolic Disorders
7 Infectious Diseases
8 Injuries, Poisoning, and Substance Abuse
9 Critical Care and Pediatric Therapeutics
10 Case Diagnosis and Management
11 Practice Test 162 questions (to be completed in 4 hours)

The exam taking skills in the first chapter provide good tips on multiple choice test taking skills that anyone can use. The questions in the proceeding chapters are challenging and appropriate for MS3 and MS4 students, Residents, and Pediatricians. The explanations include references from Pediatrics text books and guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics. After completing some questions in UWORLD I find the questions in this book MORE challenging. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is because I feel that Medical Students would benefit more if the explanations to the questions were more thorough and provided additional information about each medical condition, provide additional information as to why the wrong answers are wrong, and to avoid using medical terms that students are not yet familiar with. Despite the challenge I still think this is a great resource to for the Pediatric shelf exam & Step 2.

Great delivery and service on amazon's part
By Michael
Great delivery and service on amazon's part. The book is good as far as the explanations go, but they give the wrong answers to the questions! Even when the explanation completely contradicts what the "correct" answer stated. It's happening pretty frequently in ch 4, to the point where I'm feeling uncomfortable about continuing to use it. We'll see how chapter 5 is.

Vocabulary Learning Strategies and Foreign Language Acquisition (Second Language Acquisition), by Visnja Pavicic Takac

This is the first book that deals primarily with vocabulary learning strategies as a specific and integral subgroup of language learning strategies. Its aim is to define the concept of language learning strategies in general and their features on the basis of cognitive theory and relevant models of second language acquisition as the basis for empirical research. Furthermore, the book gives a survey of relevant research on vocabulary learning strategies and describes three original empirical studies. Thus, the book integrates the approaches of theories of second language acquisition, the theory and practice of instructed foreign (second) language learning, and the findings of current empirical research.

Review

This book provides a timely, thoughtful, and welcome contribution to the current surge of articles and edited volumes on L2 strategies. Researchers interested in vocabulary and strategies will appreciate its concentrated, theoretical accounts of vocabulary learning, whereas classroom practitioners will value the pedagogical applications it provides on topics such as L2 strategy instruction.

(Luke Plonsky, Michigan State University, USA, in Studies in Second Language Acquisition Volume 31, 2009)

The book is well-written, nicely organized, and reader-friendly, and it should be quite accessible to teachers, researchers, and graduate students alike. It provides excellent coverage of relevant theories of vocabulary learning and useful data through its empirical chapters. It should be essential reading for language teachers and graduate students working on language learning and teaching strategies and can also be enthusiastically recommended as a supplementary text for courses on methodology in second and foreign language teaching.

(Is’haaq Akbarian, University of Qom, in English for Specific Purposes 28 (2009))

This much needed book will be an invaluable text for researchers of language learning strategies and of vocabulary acquisition, and for teachers and teacher educators. It will stimulate the reader to reflect at length, not only on learner strategy deployment, but also on the problematical relationship between instruction and acquisition. The elaborate and detailed review of studies in the field makes the book suitable for those new to the field while the results of new research particularly in the second and third studies will appeal to those with more advanced knowledge and experience in the area.

(Dr Muiris O'Laoire, Institute of Technology, Tralee, Ireland)

Takac's book is a significant contribution to LLS in the field of SLA. Each chapter is clearly laid-out and well written, with excellent end-of-chapter summaries. I believe that this much needed book will be an invaluable resource and will be thought-provoking for the reader, not only on learner strategy use, but also on the relationship between strategy training and language acquisition. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to those researchers involved in LLS and of vocabulary acquisition, and for teachers and teacher educators. The wealth of illustrations and the elaborate discussion makes this book an extremely useful reference for those involved in strategy teaching and training.

(Yasemin Kirkgoz, University of Cukurova, Turkey, in Linguist List 19.2650)

Villages in the City: A Guide to South China's Informal SettlementsFrom University of Hawaii Press

Countless Chinese villages have been engulfed by modern cities. They no longer consist of picturesque farms and fengshui groves, but of high-rise buildings so close to each other that they create dark claustrophobic alleys - jammed with dripping air-conditioners, hanging clothes, caged balconies and bundles of buzzing electric wires, and crowned with a small strip of daylight, known as "thin line sky." At times, buildings stand so close to each other they are dubbed "kissing buildings" or "handshake houses" - you can literally reach out from one building and shake hands with your neighbor.

Although it is easy to see these villages as slums, a closer look reveals that they provide an important, affordable, and well-located entry point for migrants into the city. They also offer a vital mixed-use, spatially diverse and pedestrian alternative to the prevailing car-oriented modernist-planning paradigm in China. Yet most of these villages are on the brink of destruction, affecting the homes of millions of people and threatening the eradication of a unique urban fabric.

Villages in the City argues for the value of urban villages as places. To reveal their qualities, a series of drawings and photographs uncover the immense concentration of social life in the dense structures, and provide a peek into residents' homes and daily lives. Essays by a number of experts offer a deeper understanding of the topic, and help imagine how reinstating the focus on the village could lead to a richer, more variegated pathway of urbanization.

Contributors include Margaret Crawford, Jiong Wu, Marco Cenzatti, Jiang Jun, Nick Smith, and Laurence Liauw.

Review
"This book is an important and up-to-date record of China's urban villages... the villagers have managed to bypass planning and construction codes and rebuilt their villages into high-density neighborhoods that are housing millions of migrants in the cities... The spatial characteristics of these urban settlements have been understudied. This book will therefore be an invaluable addition to the existing research on China's distinctive trajectory of urbanization."
- Lanchih Po, adjunct associate professor, University of California, Berkeley

"Recent years have seen a growing interest in creative and informal urbanisms of a wide variety.... One of the best is Villages in the City edited by Stefan Al...  a fabulous piece of architecture and design graphica... The book succeeds by investigating and advocating for the informal without fetishizing it."
- Architectural Record

Review
Indeed, while Villages in the City is a fabulous piece of architecture and design graphica, written contributions from Marco Cenzatti, Margaret Crawford, Jiong Wu, and others offer vital considerations of the histories and contexts of the phenomenon. The book succeeds by investigating and advocating for the informal without fetishizing it. (Gordan Douglas, Architectural Record)

This book was boring and not easy to read. I would not recommend getting it if you go to CSUDH in Carson CA. Instructor Green in BSN 460 does not even req you to use it. All the information you need can be found on-line.

I keep going back to it!
By Jasmine Samra
I am in an accelerated BSN program that stresses nursing research, which makes sense because without research nothing would be possible. For the papers I have had to write in other classes, this has been a text that I have had to review, especially for lit. review papers. It is almost too easy to read...wish it had more details too, which is why I downgraded a star.

I used this for school. The second edition is nearly identical to the 3rd edition, which was the required text I was supposed to get. I had no troubles using this edition of the book instead and saved myself a ton of money.

About The Restoration Scriptures True Name Edition Study Bible: Why Now? The Restoration Scriptures True Name Edition Study Bible has been in the heart of Father YHWH from the very dawn of His covenant with Jacob. YHWH being in control of all things knew Yisrael’s entire future, including our exile, dispersion and regathering through the Messiah. The Messiah has come, and we are the result of His faithful mission, the return of all the believing exiles of all 12 tribes, both physically and spiritually. Meeting The Need: In order to meet the needs of this growing remnant community, The Father ordained the vision for this edition around the year 2000 CE. We did not act upon the vision at that time for many reasons. One being that the task was so monumental and daunting for us, due to the fact that we would have to self-publish any such Scriptures. However, after the strong and increasing frequency of the prompting by the Set-Apart Spirit, we decided that we could no longer postpone YHWH's will. He desired a translation that would edify and confirm the renewed Yisraelite heritage and identity of many believers in the Messiah Yahshua, who desired to live out their lifestyle as part of the true Commonwealth of Yisrael. Once we decided to obey our Father's orders, the world's first two-house true Name Bible has now become a wonderful living reality. Underlying Text To publish the unique Restoration Scriptures True Name Edition Study Bible, we used the Masoretic Text as our foundational text for the First Covenant Tanach. We then proceeded to correct obvious anti-Yahshua redactions, shamefully tampered with by the Masoretic editors. Moreover, we reinserted the true Name back into this foundational source. For the Renewed Covenant, we have used many greatly appreciated and widely accepted sources. After prayerful consideration and scholarship, we have used key sources such as the Aramaic Peshitta, which we believe to be the actual autographs, holding to the strong view of Aramaic primacy, The Matthew Shem Tov, The Dead Sea Scrolls, The Septuagint, along with consulting many other legitimate later Greek sources. Most of the sources were Semitic, since we believe the Renewed Covenant was inspired in the Semitic languages of Aramaic and Hebrew. Our Purpose: Our purpose in publishing The Restoration Scriptures True Name Edition Study Bible is to give all Yisraelite believers a translation that first and foremost uplifts and proclaims the true Names of YHWH and Yahshua, as it originally appeared in the First Covenant almost 7,000 times, as well as restoring it in the Renewed Covenant directly from the Aramaic Peshitta, and other reliable Semitic historical sources. Additional insertions were based on the consistency and immutability of the Heavenly Father, whose Name did not change (Exodus 3:14-15) just because His Son came into the world, and was greatly misunderstood. A Thought For Thought Translation: The Restoration Scriptures True Name Edition Study Bible is not a word for word translation. It is not designed to be. First of all, all translations in a real honest sense are all paraphrases. Simply put, there is no such thing as a literal word for word translation. It is just that some publishers and editors are pretty crafty at covering up that fact. They don't want you to know that they were forced by linguistic constraints and limitations to paraphrase, or add words, or even often reverse word orders. Some may find that shocking, but it remains nonetheless true. Therefore the Restoration Scriptures True Name Edition Study Bible has had to employ all of the above traditional translation methods. And we desire to be up front and honest about it. Paraphrase means,an intentional re-wording to make a point.

a deceptive work
By Rob
This bible is a Christian bible by a deceptive pastor trying to pass himself off as a Rabbi. The Jewish bible does NOT have the "new testament" attached to it. Also the commentaries written by pastor Koniuchowsky are misunderstandings such as what he writes about Isaiah 53 and why Jews do not read it in the synagogue (there are plenty of resources explaining why not so I wont put it on this review) If you want to learn about Judaism and the Jewish bible please check out Artscroll or JPS.

True To The Word or True To Your Doctrine?
By Customer
First the translation was translated by Moshe Koniuchowski who is a leader in the two-house movement.

Furthermore, the preface starts out stating that the translation emphasis the two-house movement, in other words it's been manipulated to push a particular doctrine.

I don't know about anybody else but I don't want a translation translated by one man who has a doctrinal agenda to push, I want a translation that emphasizes what the word says.

One example of the how his doctrine has influenced the translation is spelling the Messiah's name Yahshua but there is no Hebrew name Yahshua, the Hebrew spelling they say it comes from is Yod-Hay-Waw-Shin-Ayin but that is Yahushua but that is not the name that is in any of the Aramaic or Hebrew text, the Hebrew name that is used is actually Yod-Shin-Waw-Ayin which is Y'shua or Yeshua. There is only two books of of over 500 that spell it this way, two books that had been circulated throughout a rabbinical community and brought forth by a rabbi to refute the faith of the Messiah. The 500-700 Aramaic text and all the other Hebrew texts all have it as Y'shua or Yeshua over 1000x throughout the New Testament text.

I know it does not fit into the whole has to be Yah sacred name movement but it is the truth. I would rather have the truth than man-made doctrine, which is what I hate. Whenever you follow doctrines that are contrary to what the word says, you are in a cult.

Pros and Cons
By student
Pros:
* Hebrew proper names are supplied, including the replacement of the traditional English "LORD" with the Tetragrammaton.
* Footnotes provide interesting background information, insight, and clarification, from a Hebraic Roots perspective.
* A number of frequently-used English words are replaced with Hebrew transliterations, thus helping the beginning student of Hebrew to become more familiar with some basic vocabulary.

Cons: I do not intend to be unnecessarily critical, since this version has many helpful features. It is quite apparent that this project was a massive undertaking, and I certainly do not want to detract from its value. However I feel that it would benefit greatly by careful proofreading and editing, and that the following points could be made:
* On a number of occasions, the transliterated Hebrew word is not, in fact, the actual word used in the Hebrew Scriptures. This can be confusing and at times misleading.
* The punctuation is unwieldy and many times grammatically incorrect. There is an annoying overuse and misuse of commas and colons. These are often distracting and interrupt the flow of the text.
* Although the notes many times provide helpful background information, insight, and clarification, on occasion they come across as being opinionated and dogmatic. It would seem preferable if these opinions were expressed as such, rather than being presented as facts.

Covenant Theology: A Reformed and Baptistic Perspective on God's Covenants, by Greg Nichols

"Baptists who embrace their historic Calvinistic and Covenantal roots have long since needed a robust and comprehensive treatment of Covenant Theology that includes the nuanced interpretations of the biblical covenants that a baptistic hermeneutic requires. This treatment by Greg Nichols does just that and more. As a devotee of the Westminster tradition (including its chapter, 'On God's Covenant with Man'), I differ here and there; sometimes significantly so. But there is so much to applaud in this volume and Baptists will do well to read this volume carefully and with much gratitude. A splendid achievement. I, for one, will insist that my Presbyterian students read it." - Derek W. H. Thomas

A Reformed Baptist Standard for Covenant Theology
By B. Organ
This book is thoroughly Confessional (the Pastor has faithfully subscribed to the 1689 2nd LBCF for 30+ years), and is the basis for the companion audio lecture series that is freely available at the Confessing Baptist website or the Sovereign Grace Audio Treasures site (just type "Greg Nichols the covenants" in your favorite search engine) ... I have had few joys in theology greater than listening to these lectures with the book in hand to understand the ins and outs for a tricky theological topic, the Doctrine of the Divine Covenants. Nichols provides an inductive approach to his systematic categories, carefully respecting the prior place of exegetical theology, rather than imposing an untenable and foreign systematic approach upon the divine covenants. The careful listing of biblical covenants, of their particular terms, conditions and participating parties, and beneficiaries is examined in depth and detail. One crown jewel in the Pastor's careful treatment is how his work usefully investigates the Eternal Counsel of Redemption (in an appendix).

Another crown jewel in this presentation is a full chapter on contemporary modifications and developments around the theology of the covenants. Pastor Nichols unpacks the (relatively) controversial issues addressed not only by early groups of reformers, but also improved upon by recent reputable reformers, such as Murray, Robertson and Kline. There are other reputable Reformed Baptists treatments on the topic, but I personally prefer Nichols's scholarship.

Read it you may enjoy it.
By George
This is a book on Covenant theology that tries to clear up some of the misunderstandings about this movement within the Baptist fold. It indicates that some Baptist have taken a different course in the realm of theology and as such are not actually following the real way. To read this book is to sift through layers of change and return to a course that is true and profound.

Nichols' idiosyncratic perspective is not confessional
By Brandon Adams
Greg Nichols is a respected Reformed Baptist teacher. I have not had the opportunity to meet him, but I'm sure it would be a blessing to do so. I hesitate to offer my thoughts here for the simple fact that Nichols has been thinking through these issues for about 30 years longer than I have. However, I have been urged by others to share my concerns here on Amazon.

Nichols' book came along at a time when there really wasn't a systematic treatment of covenant theology from a modern, confessional baptist perspective. It therefore garnered tremendous support and enthusiasm. However, once the book came out, it became apparent that it was not a representation of historic reformed baptist covenant theology, as some anticipated, but was instead the idiosyncratic culmination of Nichols' thoughts on the topic. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that. We should all endeavor to think through issues on our own, not simply resting on the shoulders of those before us. The trouble, however, is that Nichols does not interact with any historic baptist material on the subject and he presents his view as confessional, which it is not.

[For those interested in a more faithful representation of of the 2nd London Baptist Confession’s view of covenant theology, please google “1689 Federalism”]
-----------

For the sake of space, I will simply focus on the chief concern: the concept of merit.

Nichols rejects the concept of merit, denying that Adam could have earned eternal rest/life through the covenant of works. In doing so, Nichols sounds frighteningly similar to Norm Shepherd. I do not believe Nichols has yet taken his denial of merit to its logical conclusion as Shepherd has done. But he shares the same starting point.

Norman Shepherd taught a false gospel of works righteousness at Westminster Theological Seminary in the 70s by arguing good works are instrumental to justification (though he later changed the way he expressed this principle). When asked in their ordination exam how we are justified, graduates were answering “by faith and works”. When asked who taught them that, they said Professor Shepherd. He paved the way for the Federal Vision. Edmund Clowney summarizes:

"The debate about justification arose from concern that Professor Shepherd was making obedience as well as faith instrumental to justification. This was occasioned originally by Professor Shepherd’s effort to deal with James 2:24. His argument was that since good works are not the ground of our justification, just as faith is not the ground of our justification, and since both are necessary for our justification, we may question the legitimacy of speaking of faith as the alone instrument of justification (WCF XI:2). Good works, too, may be said to be instrumental."

In 2002, Shepherd delivered 4 lectures titled “What’s All the Fuss?” regarding his views on justification:

What’s All the Fuss? (Part 1): The Biblical Doctrine of Justification
What’s All the Fuss? (Part 2): The Church Doctrine of Justification by Faith
What’s All the Fuss? (Part 3): Job Justified by Faith
What’s All the Fuss? (Part 4): A Parable About Three Men

The thrust of his lectures is to show that the Bible does not teach a works-merit paradigm. He presents his position as the “faith-grace” or “covenantal” paradigm and he opposes this to the “works-merit” paradigm.

"Well the preceding is only a sampling of the problems we run into on the works-merit paradigm. We become uncomfortable expressing biblical doctrines using biblical language. Texts get bent out of shape in order to make them fit into a paradigm that does not arise out of Scripture and is foreign to Scripture. And without meaning to do so or wanting to do so we can find ourselves compromising the integrity of what is written in the Word of God.
The biblical paradigm, I would suggest to you, is one that is consistently covenantal without the schizophrenic antithesis between the covenant of works and an antithetical covenant of grace."
-Lecture 2, @27:00

In lecture 1 he insists that the biblical doctrine of justification consists in forgiveness of sins only.

"According to Paul, justification is simply the remission of sin. Justification is the forgiveness of sin. A sinner is justified when his sin is forgiven so that he is accepted by God and becomes an heir of eternal life."
-Lecture 1, @11:15

It does not provide a righteousness not our own, it only forgives our sins. And forgiveness alone is insufficient to eternally save anyone. It merely makes us eligible for eternal life.

"By his death and resurrection, Jesus once and for all paid the death penalty for sin so that we could be forgiven. By his death and resurrection, Jesus gave us the power of a new life so that we could really live in communion with one another and with the Lord as covenant keepers. He wrote his law on our hearts so that we would obey and live."
-Lecture 2, @37:00

"Proverbs 12:28 “In the way of righteousness there is life. Along that path is immortality” That is salvation by grace in the Old Testament and it is also salvation by grace in the New Testament. The works-merit paradigm has no way of accounting for those words in Proverbs 12:28. In terms of that paradigm this is nothing but salvation by merit or works, but it’s presented to us in the bible as gospel."
-Lecture 2, @43:40

Faith is not belief in the work of Christ. Faith is our obedience.

"Through faith in Jesus Christ, faith in his blood, we can know now that we will stand forgiven, justified, in the day of judgment. This faith is an ongoing reality in our lives. We live every day and every hour of every day by faith. And that faith is a living, active penitent and obedient faith. [Inaudible] By the grace of God we have a living and active faith. The good news of the gospel is that the just will live by faith, even though they do not deserve, in themselves, to live. We are pilgrims on the path of life, the narrow path that leads to eternal life. The Bible calls it the way of holiness. By the grace of God alone we have been placed on that path and we stay on that path and we will reach our ultimate destination."
-Lecture 2, @46:00

"Yes we have tended to do that [separate the two hinges of justification and sanctification]. And the reason we do that is because of this works-merit paradigm that lies at the bottom of the way that we have structured this doctrine. Because in this paradigm where the meritorious ground for our salvation is the active obedience of Christ imputed to us and not anything that we do for ourselves. And again, within that paradigm that make sense. That’s what makes it evangelical. But it creates a situation in which now we hear any demand for righteousness in the bible, any demand for repentance, as, which of course is a matter of sanctification, as conflicting with justification by free grace so that the stress on sanctification becomes a threat to justification by free grace, within that paradigm. And the way in which people try to account for it is to say, well, the good works, the obedience will automatically flow once we have believed and been justified, then the sanctification will come along. But that isn’t the way that the bible presents it. We’re constantly exhorted to persevere in righteousness and holiness, without which we will not see the Lord. Then I say, what is the paradigm that accounts for that kind of biblical language?"
-Lecture 2, @56:00

"The active obedience of Christ is not the meritorious ground of our salvation because, not because of any inadequacy in it or anything like that, but because there is no such thing in the bible as obtaining salvation by the merit of works. Salvation after the fall or the gift of eternal life before the fall was never granted on the basis of the merit of works but was always a free gift that is received by faith. That is why Adam was tested on the point of faith. Will we live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God?"
-Lecture 2, @1:03:00

We are in the same position as Adam in terms of our need to obtain eternal life. The only difference is that when we sin, it is forgiven. But our works play the same role as they did for Adam before the fall. This is contrary to the London Baptist Confession

London Baptist Confession

"19.6._____ Although true believers be not under the law as a covenant of works, to be thereby justified or condemned, yet it is of great use to them as well as to others, in that as a rule of life, informing them of the will of God and their duty, it directs and binds them to walk accordingly; discovering also the sinful pollutions of their natures, hearts, and lives, so as examining themselves thereby, they may come to further conviction of, humiliation for, and hatred against, sin; together with a clearer sight of the need they have of Christ and the perfection of his obedience; it is likewise of use to the regenerate to restrain their corruptions, in that it forbids sin; and the threatenings of it serve to shew what even their sins deserve, and what afflictions in this life they may expect for them, although freed from the curse and unallayed rigour thereof. The promises of it likewise shew them God’s approbation of obedience, and what blessings they may expect upon the performance thereof, though not as due to them by the law as a covenant of works; so as man’s doing good and refraining from evil, because the law encourageth to the one and deterreth from the other, is no evidence of his being under the law and not under grace."

The confession articulates a contrast between the way our good works function and the way Adam’s good works functioned. His obedience to the law was as a covenant of works. Ours is not. This distinction is fundamental to the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone articulated in the confession (note the affirmation of the imputation of active obedience):

"11.1._____ Those whom God effectually calleth, he also freely justifieth, not by infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as righteous; not for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ’s sake alone; not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing Christ’s active obedience unto the whole law, and passive obedience in his death for their whole and sole righteousness by faith, which faith they have not of themselves; it is the gift of God."

Shepherd is right that this doctrine of justification rests upon the works-merit paradigm and upon the concept of a covenant of works. Sam Waldron (reformed baptist) notes:

"[T]here is no place in Shepherd’s theology for anything like the dichotomy between law and gospel that lays at the foundation of justification sola fide for the Reformation. If there is no such thing as meritorious works, if Christ’s work was believing obedience, if the obedience of faith is the righteousness of faith, then we are clearly dealing with a system of doctrine that has no way to express the Reformation’s contrast between law and gospel. Such a system cannot consistently affirm the justification sola fide squarely built on this contrast.

Allegiance to The Westminster Confession is often understood as subscription to its “system of doctrine.” The Westminster Confession accurately represents the Reformation system of doctrine when it grounds its soteriology on a contrast between the law (“the covenant of works”) and the gospel (“the covenant of grace”). Shepherd has no place for such a structure in his theology and cannot, therefore, affirm consistently the “system of doctrine” taught in the Confession he cites so often in his writings."

Covenant Theology: A Reformed and Baptistic Perspective on God’s Covenants

With all of that in mind, it is particularly troubling to see people continue to recommend Greg Nichols’ book as a faithful representation of the system of doctrine taught in the London Baptist Confession. Nichols’ book is idiosyncratic and not representative of the confession, nor its signatories (see, for example, here and here). Confessional Reformed Baptists should stop recommending his book as representative of our confessional views.

The similarities between much of what Nichols writes and what Shepherd teaches is striking:

From Greg Nichols’ “Covenant Theology”

1
In sum, Adam’s original relation to God was familial and filial-parental. Thus it was warm and affectionate, not cold or distant. It was not an impersonal relationship between “contracting parties.” It was not between a disinterested judge and an unrelated defendant, or a ruler to an unknown subject. Thus, a “covenant of works” model simply doesn’t comport with its filial-parental framework. Categories like “contracting parties,” “stipulations,” and “penalties” are foreign to this familial relation. Such categories might suitably define a contract between corporations forging a business venture through their lawyers. They seem woefully inadequate to define a parental prohibition. In Genesis 2:16-17 God addresses Adam, not as a lawyer, but as a Father. This prohibition is an integral part of Adam’s filial relation to God. Thus, the covenant of works model wrenches this prohibition from its filial foundation. This is my primary objection to imposing this motif and its categories on this prohibition. (337)

2
This conditional form [of the Adamic Covenant] is similar to the conditional form of the Mosaic covenant… Observe that if [Adam] had complied with the condition, he would simply have done what was required. He would not have merited or earned anything – because he merely gave what was owed, trust and compliance. (346-7)

God freely blessed Adam with the Sabbath and with the hope it symbolized. Adam did not earn the Sabbath by works. Thus, Adam did not merit his hope by works – but he could sin and forfeit his hope. The covenant of works motif seems to say that Adam had to earn the hope of eternal rest that God gave him freely as a privilege… By eternal hope I refer to this expectation of divine blessing once he fulfilled his mammoth vocation. When he had populated and subdued the earth, he would have entered his rest. (341)

3
An Evangelical Explanation of the Mosaic Covenant’s Conditional Form
In this conditional promise God doesn’t say: “if you repent and believe, then you will be my special people,” but, “if you keep my law, then you will be my special people.” God said to Adam, if you eat you will die, implying, if you obey you will retain life and Eden. Similarly, he said to Israel, if you obey, you will retain Canaan, but if you disobey, you will be judged and disinherited. As Adam lost Eden, you will lose Canaan…

This teaches the necessity of gospel obedience unto complete salvation… (Lev 18:5; Matt. 5:20; Rom 8:12-13)

Jesus warned that evangelical obedience was necessary to enter heaven… This is how the conditional promise of the Mosaic covenant applies to the Christian life. It demonstrates the necessity of perseverance in gospel faith and holiness. …The law is gracious because it teaches us that if we live a holy life, mortify the deeds of the body, and keep evangelically the commandments of God, we will go to heaven, not to hell. (233-4)

Norman Shepherd

1
One of the primary points emphasized in the Sandy Cove lectures (July, 1981) is that the obedience required of Adam in the “Creation Covenant,” had he rendered it, would not have been meritorious. Adam was a son, not a laborer. The concept of wages earned, reward merited, is not appropriate to the father-son relationship. This is not a point made somewhat incidentally by Mr. Shepherd along the way, but a point that is evidently fundamental in his theology of the covenant.

2
Mr. Shepherd rejects not only the term “covenant of works” but the possibility of any merit or reward attaching to the obedience of Adam in the creation covenant. He holds that faithful obedience is the condition of all covenants in contrast to the distinction made in the Westminster Confession. The Westminster Confession states in Chapter Vll that the first covenant “was a covenant of works wherein life was promised to Adam, and in him to his posterity, upon condition of perfect and personal obedience.” In contrast, in the second covenant, the covenant of grace, the Lord “freely offereth unto sinners life and salvation by Jesus Christ, requiring of them faith in him, that they may be saved.”

Reason and Specifications Supporting the Action of the Board of Trustees in Removing Professor Shepherd

3
He describes the requirement of our covenant-keeping obedience in terms drawn from his description of Adam’s covenant-keeping. We have resources that Adam did not have, Mr. Shepherd shows. We have forgiveness of sins in the blood of Christ; we have the Spirit to move us to obey; but we also have the same covenant condition to meet, and the same threat for disobedience.

Reason and Specifications Supporting the Action of the Board of Trustees in Removing Professor Shepherd

As the Lord God came to Mount Sinai to deliver his commandments to Moses and all Israel, so also the Lord Jesus came to another mount to deliver the commandments of the new covenant to his disciples and to the church of the new covenant…. Far from abolishing covenant obligation, Jesus says, “Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:20). (The Call of Grace)

The obedience required of Israel is not the obedience of merit, but the obedience of faith. It is the fullness of faith. Obedience is simply faithfulness to the Lord; it is the righteousness of faith. (The Call of Grace, 39)

---------------

Shepherd Analysis

"The ‘covenant dynamic’ of Mr. Shepherd makes the function of our obedience in the covenant to be the same as the function of the obedience of Adam in the covenant before the fall. … Adam’s covenantal obedience in the garden did not merit any reward; neither does our covenantal obedience. But both are required by the covenant command. The threat for disobedience is eternal death. This threat is as real for us as it was for Adam in the garden. The warning of the New Covenant must not be blunted or made hypothetical in any way. God’s threat to Adam or to Israel was not idle, and the same sanction of the covenant is directed against us in the New Covenant."
Reason and Specifications Supporting the Action of the Board of Trustees in Removing Professor Shepherd

Summary of Shepherd’s errors:

1) Denies the concept of merit

2) Therefore denies the covenant of works

3) Therefore denies Christ merited anything

4) Therefore defines forensic justification as only forgiveness of sins (rejects imputation of Christ’s righteousness)

5) Defines faith as including obedience (faithfulness).

6) Argues that the process of sanctification (regeneration) is prior to justification.

7) The “works of the law” that we are justified apart from are works done in an attempt to merit a reward (Rom 3:28). This does not have reference to “good works” of the believer (obedience of faith), which is necessary for justification (Gal 5:6).

8) Christ’s covenantal righteousness was his living, active, obedient faith. This faith was credited to Christ as righteousness.

9) The same obedience of faith is required of believers in every covenant. This active faith/obedience is credited to believers as righteousness (Gen 15:6; Rom 4:11; 1:5; 16:26)

10) Argues there is a “not yet” aspect of justification.

11) Our works will be judged on the last day to determine if we go to heaven or hell.

Great beginner book!
By Elena
I love this book a lot!
I am only about 20% in because this book contains a lot of chapters and I want to slowly go over each chapter by reading every text out-loud a few times. I am around A2 and questionably B1 (haha) and I find the text to be quite easy and fun to read. The book is very useful for building vocabulary and making you feel comfortable with the way the language is structured. Listen to the audio on youtube! I just wish the audio was in mp3 because that would make everything easier for me to listen to outside.
For the price, you cannot find a better deal! :D

By Desirée Manou
Very nice book. I read it together with my students in class and they really enjoy to be able to read such a variety of texts with ease. There is also an audio book of the chapters on youtube which complements the book. Good choice for German-learners.

Ausgezeichnet! Excellent book!
By Daniel Leo Simpson
Wow, what a great book to begin learning German. You can tell in the forty lessons, that there is a clear plan to introduce new vocabulary. But you're never 'overwhelmed' because the writer cleverly repeats phrases to reinforce the vocabulary. Never boring, always interesting, this book proceeds in a logical way that's engaging and done in bite-size blocks of text in each lesson so you're really able to absorb the material easily and almost without effort. A great book and a 'no-brainer' price. Don't forget to go to the authors site/channel for the audio if you want to include a comprehension element to the experience. I just LOVE this book and the audio that goes with it. Great job! Highly recommended!
