A powerful and compelling case for an ethical, interest-free, monetary economy

Monetary economics may appear to be a kind of hidden black art understood only by an elite handful pulling all the strings. But as one reads Mr Diwany's book it becomes clear that the conditions for a just and fair monetary system are actually technically rather restrictive. Indeed if one follows the discussion closely one is led, seemingly unavoidably, to a monetary system of the kind prescribed in Islam which disallows interest completely, and requires the payment of 'zakat', which is a form of annual charitable tax fixed at 2.5% of assets owned.

Mr Diwany's logic is impeccable, and his arguments are backed up by numerous poignant illustrative examples, which leave the reader in little doubt regarding the conclusions reached. The case put forward for an ethical, interest-free, monetary economy is powerful and compelling, and this book should be mandatory reading for anyone concerned about the illnesses plaguing the economy today and wondering if there might exist a more just and fair alternative.

About the Author
C. M. Agrawal is the Vice President for Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and the Peter Flawn Professor of Biomedical Engineering, specializing in orthopaedic and cardiovascular biomaterials and implants. He is a member of the International College of Fellows of Biomaterials Science and Engineering, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, a former President of the Society for Biomaterials, and was awarded the 2010 Julio Palmaz Award for Innovation in Healthcare and the Biosciences.

J. L. Ong is Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the USAA Foundation Distinguished Professor at the University of Texas, San Antonio, where his research focuses on modification and characterization of biomaterials surfaces for dental and orthopaedic applications, tissue engineering ceramic scaffolds, protein-biomaterial interactions and bone-biomaterial interactions. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

Mark Appleford is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas, San Antonio, focusing on tissue-biomaterial interactions, cellular engineering, reconstructive tissue engineering, and biocompatibility.

Gopinath Mani is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of South Dakota, focusing on surface modification and characterization of biomaterials, nanomaterials and nanomedicine, biodegradable metals and drug delivery systems. He is the Program Chair for the Surface Characterization and Modification Special Interest Group of the Society for Biomaterials, and has developed and taught numerous graduate-level programs in biomaterials engineering.

An ideal textbook for an undergraduate course in biomaterials.

Being an instructor for an undergraduate introduction to biomaterials course, I have struggled with finding a book that caters to the undergraduate audience. The book I had been using in the past was over 1500 pages, read like a compilation of research papers and I consistently received feedback on how overwhelming the book felt to an undergraduate student. I was thrilled after reviewing the book by Mauli Agrawal who is one of the leading experts in the field of biomaterials. The book gives readers with little or no knowledge of biomaterials a perfect introduction to the subject. The book is well written combining relevant theory with related engineering applications. The chapters have representative questions at the end allowing students to evaluate their understanding of the concepts learned in that chapter. The chapters are well written and comprehensive enough without overwhelming the reader. An ideal textbook for an undergraduate course in biomaterials. Also like the availability of the Ebook feature which a lot students are preferring.

...and I actually READ a whole textbook!

This book was an excellent complement to my Biocompatibility textbook and elaborated on topics not covered in my other Biomaterials courses. Modern and practical applications of materials for implants are well covered for the undergraduate student, and the text chapters are concise and easy to read. Illustrations are designed to communicate concepts, not overwhelm with information. Pictures included in the text are up to date with current devices, and I especially enjoyed the book's emphasis on attention to detail when designing and implementing fabrication and manufacturing processes using specific examples of success and/or failure. Overall, this book is a great addition to the library of any aspiring Bioengineer!

Chapters are well laid out and it gives readers brief and bright view on different fields of this science. It includes usable and practical review on current characterization methods, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, novel biomatrials, surface modification methods, cell-biomaterial interactions and also clinical applications. I highly recommend this book not only to the students interested in this field of study but also biomedical engineers who work on this field experimentally.

About the Author
After earning a degree in physics at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, Sumio Iijima moved to Arizona State University as a post-doctoral associate where he initiated high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) (1970-1982). Using the technique, he has brought a new type of information of local atomic structures of crystals into condensed matter physics, solid state chemistry, crystallography, mineralogy and materials science. Ample experiences with the different types of materials including nanostructures of carbon materials have led him to discover carbon nanotubes in later years. In these days the technique has been known as the most powerful one in the research fields of nano-materials science and nanotechnology. In 1982 he returned to Japan and worked for 5 years on a national ERATO project on nano-particles, then joined the NEC fundamental research laboratories.

In 1991 he discovered carbon nanotubes that have initiated nano-materials science and nanotechnology and has being attracted world-wide researchers in academia and industry. Following the discovery, he has been honored with numerous awards and prizes that include: Franklin Medal in physics (2001), Agilent Europhysics award (2002), Balzan Prize (2007, Italy-Switzerland), Kavli Prize (Norway, 2008), Prince of Asturias Award (Spain, 2008), Order of Culture (Japan, 2009), He is members of Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Science (USA. 2007), the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2009), member of Japan Academy (2010) and foreign member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2011).

About the Author
Gary Coover has been playing concertina ever since finding a cheap dusty model in a music store many years ago. He now plays several different types of concertina, including Anglo, English and Jeffries Duet. He was the host and producer of the "Shepherd's Hey" radio program for over 15 years, and was a founding member of The Four Bricks out of Hadrian's Wall folkrock band and the Men of Houston Morris Team. Gary has spent the last several years teaching and transcribing tunes for Anglo concertina, and is one of the organizers of the Old Palestine Concertina Weekend in East Texas.

i'm learning !

After playing the accordion, piano, and keyboard for over 50+ years, I developed arthritis. My fingers made playing keys extremely difficult.. Since my fingers were a little crooked, playing an instrument with buttons seemed the way to go to continue playing music. I purchased a 30-button concertina and needed to learn from a book. I live in a rural area, so that was the only way to learn. This book's instruction starts out very basic and then build your skill level gradually. It's a great beginner's book 1

Learn an approach - not just tunes!

If you're a melody player who throws in an occasional chord, on a 30 button anglo, Gary Coover's "Harmonic Style" will open your eyes and provide interest. Like all Gary's books, it teaches an approach not just a few tunes!

Excellent book, good harmonies, fun songs.

I like this book a lot. I had been playing concertina about a month when my husband bought this for me. I figured out fairly quickly how to play a basic melody, which was fine, but it wasn’t enough. I craved harmony and accompaniment, which I knew the concertina was capable of. At first it was difficult to play the melody and then try to put the left hand in; I didn’t think I would get it. But it came together on “You Are All I Have”, a beautiful waltz in the book. This is so much more satisfying than just a single melody line.

There are plenty of traditional British and Irish tunes, but I’m really glad that the author also included “St. James Infirmary”, “The Song From Moulin Rouge”, “Over the Rainbow” (especially beautiful) and other tunes not usually played on the concertina.

And if you can’t figure out exactly how a tune goes, you can go to Youtube where Coover plays all of them. That helps a lot.

The tablature system is fairly easy and you can catch on to it. Right hand buttons are shown above the notes, left hand buttons below and the pull is indicated by a line over the top. It’s a pretty good system. The one downside, I would say, is that, then, transferring to regular music, I’m somewhat lost without the button numbers. Many of the tunes indicate both the chord name (G, C,F, Dm) and the buttons you need to push, but one tends to look at the numbers and ignore the names. I’m sure this is remedied with continued practice (or covering up the numbers?).

A very fun, helpful book, worth every penny!

Jover-Ledesma, LL.B., LL.M. (Taxation), CPA, is the principal of CPATAX SERVICES, INC., a tax, accounting and consulting firm. Ms. Jover-Ledesma specializes in federal, estate and international taxation. She is a licensed CPA in Illinois. Her practice also includes audit, accounting and wealth planning. She is currently an Adjunct Faculty at Harper College, Illinois. Ms. Jover-Ledesma earned her degrees in accounting and law from the University of the Philippines and her master's degree in law in taxation from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology.

About the Author

Amy S. Kinser, Esq., Series Editor

Amy holds a B.A. degree in Chemistry with a Business minor from Indiana University, and a J.D. from the Maurer School of Law, also at Indiana University. After working as an environmental chemist, starting her own technology consulting company, and practicing intellectual property law, she has spent the past 15 years teaching technology at the Kelley School of Business in Bloomington, Indiana. Currently, she serves as the Director of Computer Skills and Senior Lecturer at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. She also loves spending time with her two sons, Aidan and J. Matthew, and her husband J. Eric.

 

Kristyn A. Jacobson

Kristyn holds an M.S. in Education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a B.S. in Business Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. She has been a faculty member and department chair of the Business Technology department at Madison College in Madison, Wisconsin for over 14 years. She also serves as the curriculum coordinator for Microsoft Excel beginning, intermediate, and advanced level courses for the college. As well as teaching, Kristyn provides training to businesses on the Microsoft Office Suite including MS Project, project management, customer service, personal productivity, and time management. Prior to teaching at Madison College, she taught at a business college in Des Moines, Iowa where she helped implement their online learning program while also teaching traditional business courses.

 

J. Eric Kinser

Eric Kinser received his B.S. degree in Biology from Indiana University and his M.S. in Counseling and Education from the Indiana School of Education. He has worked in the medical field and in higher education as a technology and decision support specialist. He is currently a senior lecturer in the Operations and Decision Technology Department at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. When not teaching he enjoys experimenting with new technologies, traveling, and hiking with his family.

 

Diane L. Kosharek

Diane is a full-time Business Technology faculty member at Madison College in Madison, WI. In addition to her faculty role, she works closely with business and industry specialists, developing and delivering tailored training solutions to employees in areas such as customer service, software applications and business writing skills. Prior to joining Madison College, she worked as a Technology Training Consultant, providing consultation and production assistance to teaching faculty and staff to incorporate appropriate technology in their courses to enhance learning. Diane holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master’s Degree in Educational Computing from Cardinal Stritch University.

 

Brant Moriarity

Brant P. Moriarity earned a B.A. in Religious Studies/Philosophy and a M.S. in Information Systems at Indiana University. He is a Senior Lecturer at the Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business where he teaches topics such as data management and analysis, as well as the strategic use of Information Systems in business. So many great tips in this book that really work! It's nice having the Men's and Women's meal plans separately with achievable calories per day. The seven stages are not easy and thats why I see the results and highly recommend this diet to anyone needing to get healthy again. Dropped 10 pounds the first week!!!

Very Provocative View of the Art of Breathing

This is a very interesting book that disputes some commonly held theories on breathing. The main contention is that we benefit from breathing less than from breathing more and that, as a result, there is an increase in oxygen and CO2. Surprisingly, this increase in CO2 is a positive influencee on our health. The author provides numerous scientific studies backing up his assertions and it appears that there is more than enough evidence supporting these studies. However, these scientific studies are voluminous, somewhat lengthy and important only to the most scientific minded readers. Perhaps these studies should have been indexed rather than placed in the text of the book. Lastly, although the author does a first rate job in proving this theory, he does very little in explaining the technique. This technique of breathing was developed by Konstantin Buteyco and is very similar to some ancient yogic practices. Further information can be obtained from the internet under Buteyco. There are also several breathing devices including the Frolov Device, Ultrabreathe, Expand-A-Lung and others that can be used in conjunction with the Buteyco Technique for quicker progress.

This book is really eye-opening, even to a longtime practitioner of yoga. I guess I never fully understood just how important breathing properly really is. After reading this book, I know I will get even more benefit from my yoga sessions.

Anyone who does yoga needs to read this book.

don't do yoga until you read this first!

This book was so good I couldn't stop reading until I finished the entire thing. If you are new to the Buteyko breathing method then you might not know any of the info in this book. I have read a lot on the subject but still learned some new things from this book. I can't wait until the author comes out with the second yoga breathing book! I need to apply this knowledge like now. Buy this book before you even think about joining a yoga class or doing it at home!
