One of the worst GMAT prep books on the market.

This GMAT guide will likely reduce your potential GMAT score, not help it, for all the reasons outlined below. The only reason to purchase this book is for some extra quantitative and sentence correction practice.
Background: I purchased this book to get additional problems to practice on before taking the GMAT. Previously, I had worked through the Official Guide, Kaplan, and Princeton books. Prior to purchasing this book I was regularly scoring 700+ on the GMAT practice CATs.
The first problem with this book is in the format. The book comes with four written practice exams. These exams are essentially useless for gaining an understanding of your personal timing of the GMAT now that it is given as a Computer Aided Test. A strong student will quickly finish the tests because of the over-abundance of easy problems. On the real GMAT, the computer will start throwing consecutive difficult problems at you, slowing good students down significantly. Computer Based tests are available at Barron's online for an additional $99. The Kaplan Premier 2013, on the other hand, includes 5 CATs with the purchase price of their books. The most recent Princeton Review Guide includes 2 CATs. Manhattan GMAT offers 5 CATs for 49.99. The list goes on.
The book is also written towards the GMAT as it was written in the 2000's. The section on Essay Writing focuses how to write an issue essay-an essay that was deleted in the new GMAT. That section also trains you to write for two human readers, ignoring the fact that the essays are all graded by one computer and one human reader now. The quantitative problems are far too straightforward. The GMAT likes to word its quantitative questions in a very confusing manner and presents them in a far different manner than the Barron's presents its quantitative problems.. The review sections are bland and do not highlight most of the tricks that the GMAT likes to pull on the unsuspecting test-taker.
The largest problem with this book is with the Integrated Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning sections. Quite simply, a correct Barron's answer is likely to be a wrong GMAT answer. The RC and CR questions are ambiguously worded, and the answer choices include several possibly correct answers, based on the GMAT way of reasoning. Barrons even selects correct answers that the GMAT would call a wrong answer, especially on inference questions. Half of the Integrated Reasoning 'questions' that appear in the sample tests would never, EVER, appear in the actual GMAT. For example, one question assumes prior knowledge of the characteristics of certain animal species. The GMAT is never ambiguous, and never assumes prior specific knowledge of any subject. The Verbal Section in Barrons will likely train you to think in a manner that results in more wrong answers on the GMAT, not less.
With the large amount of resources available for GMAT prep, it is wise to avoid this guide altogether and select a guide produced by another company like Kaplan, Manhattan GMAT, Veritas, Princeton Review, or, especially, the Official Guide by the GMAC.

The author does not know GMAT AWA at all.

While the book is reasonable, it is extremely disappointing to see the author does not even know what are the topics in GMAT AWA. the author keeps talking about personal opinion stuff that ask for personal experience, or examples on a specific topic while the GMAT official site actually gives out most of the AWA question topics which ask about how well a given paragraph reasons. It is not excusable for a Ph. D and making the whole barron's series untrustworthy for me

Worst GMAT Review Book

The tips and questions in this book are horrible. The tips are along the lines of "Read passages quickly, but not in haste." Well, duh. That is a dumb tip. The questions are written in a way that multiple interpretations can be drawn...including math problems! It is not clear what the questions are asking, so it's very hard to work through the problems. Do not waste your time with this one.
