About the Author
Sophie Blackall has illustrated many books for young readers, including Jumpy Jack & Googily; Wild Boars Cook; and Meet Wild Boars, for which she received the Founder's Award for Illustration given by the Society of Illustrators. She is also the illustrator of the popular series Ivy and Bean. She lives in Brooklyn, New York with her two children.

Lovely bedtime book

This is a lovely bedtime book that is sure to resonate with parents and kids alike. It's told in the form of a conversation between a small boy and his mother, starting with those infamous words "Are You Awake?" It's a situation every parent has been in - it's 4:00 am and your little one can't sleep and has a million questions. The author perfectly captures the voice of a young child who insists on asking questions like "Why are the stars still out?", "Why hasn't the alarm clock rung?" or "Why is the moon still out?" The patient mom answers every time "Because it's still nighttime".
The illustrations are whimsical and expressive. The boys eyes are often luminous in the dark, and the mom's bleary eyed responses are accurate and endearing. The colors are muted as befitting a bedtime book, and the small size only adds to the feeling of an intimate little story best shared by parent and child. This is a perfect choice for any young child's personal bedtime collection. Recommended.

Edward is awake. It is nighttime. He wakes his mother up and engages her in conversation for a long time until he finally falls back to sleep. His dad arrives home at the break of day after working all night as a pilot and goes straight to bed. Edward tries to wake his dad up at the conclusion of this story.
This story will be a familiar one to parents of young children. Parents will be able to appreciate its realism.
"Mom?
Mmm?
"What does your face look like when you're asleep?
I don't know.
Why don't you?
Because I can't see.
Why can't you see?
Because it's dark...."

Here Comes Sunshine

A young boy snuggles in bed with his mother and waits for morning, though it seems that nighttime will never end. His father, a pilot, is flying a plane through the night sky. The boy asks question after question of his mother until he finally falls asleep, just in time for the sun to rise and his father to arrive back home. This lovely book, for children ages 2-5, will be especially useful for those who sometimes cannot sleep.
