Author surveys a vast landscape of literature

Academic study of the Hindu revival movement has become a recent subject of interest to me and I have looked around quite a bit for good books on the matter. "Decolonizing the Hindu Mind" by Koenraad Elst has been one of the best finds so far. KE attempts to take on a subject that is not only vast in scope and time but also is a field that is changing at a very fast rate.

1. I have to say that among the books i have read, "Decolonizing the Hindu Mind" does an admirable job of maintaining objectivity and presenting a clear analysis and chain of thought.

2. The book is very neatly laid out and starts with a good overview of important characters/groups in the Hindu revival movement. Kudos to the editor on doing a fine job.

3. I like the fact that additional literature is so painstakingly well referenced. KE provides sufficient quotes from other authors to support his conclusions and inferences. This is something of a rarity in most Hindu studies (with most authors preferring to draw conclusions based on incomplete, nonexistent facts and quotations).
4 stars for the above good points.

I am of the opinion that KEs criticism of the RSS is sometimes unjustified in light of its own stated objectives and methods, but i have seen nothing remotely vituperative in his criticisms. Also, KE tends to forget that not everything that people do is logical and so has been the case of many Hindu groups and Hindu leaders. In retrospect we are able to see their faults, but the persons were the product of their times as much as they shaped it.

Overall, i recommend this book highly. It is a must have for any person interested in Hindutva and Hindu revivalism. It has valuable lessons for everyone concerned (on both sides of the religious/ideological/academic spectrum). I just finished reading my copy, but i will be revisiting this a couple more times in the immediate future.

This book completely changed my life. I had picked it randomly from a shelf in Crossword in pune. Had no clue who was Dr. Elst. But this one book made me interested in Indian politics and gave me a far better perspectives on different political movements in India.

This book is actually a PhD thesis and in terms of content Dr. Elst takes a lot of pain to interview 100s of people, read 100s of related books, define basic terminology uses and then test all people and political movements by what they claim, what they do and what is their official policy.

The book is an excellent eye opener to see why almost all political players in India are taking people for granted, how government control of various aspects of our lives have hurt everyone and how India remains in colonial mindset even today.

This book introduced me to the great work of Arun Shourie, Sita Ram Goel, Ram Swarup and so on.

I especially enjoy Susan Wiggs and wish she would get on the writing track again, as I'm missing her new books. However, recently I have had to find her more obsure books.

Occasionally, there is a diamond in the rough.. Ok this is so this is not too rough .. it is a polished mystery romance and an excellent read with interesting characters and intrigue. Sorry I could not agree with the person that said it had too much mystery?? Hummm... I guess that what makes us all different. Alfie Kohn was recently described by Time magazine as "perhaps the country's most outspoken critic of education's fixation on grades [and] test scores." Amazon should stock this surefire potential bestseller!

This is an extremely important book written by a courageous thoughtful and articulate spokesman for children. Kohn explains to citizens, school administrators and parents punch-drunk with an insatiable quest for tests and test scores just how much their simplistic efforts at school 'improvement' damage our schools and the learning potential of kids.
The costs are just too high for this national obsession and escalation of educational violence to go unchecked. The testing war is financed by textbook publishers, corporations and dubious politicians, like George W. Bush, who equate learning with measurement, the casualties are children and creative teachers.
Those advocating nutty ideas like annual (or even more frequent) mandatory standardized testing are transforming our public schools from social institutions where intellect and creativity are socially constructed into corporatized sterile test-preparation centers.
Alfie Kohn's new book should be purchased in quantity and distributed at school parent nights, school board meetings, cocktail parties and teacher lounges. Alfie Kohn is a 21st Century Patriot whose timely book should be a clarion call to all concerned with children and the future of our schools.

Standardized Testing--A Call to Action

Death and taxes are often quoted as givens in our society. In the world of education, one might add standardized testing to this grouping. If we examine the current call for educational standards in this country and the accompanying emphasis on high stakes standardized testing, one may immediately recall the discomfort of sitting in a room of silent test takers, usually a gymnasium with only the sounds of the proctors and their wing-tipped shoes creaking up and down the rows as answers are feverishly bubbled in with number two pencils. Alfie Kohn, reseracher and an outspoken critic of our public school system and its emphasis on competition, brings to light in this book, a need for a modern day "call to arms." For Kohn, establishes a strong framework from the start, as he characterizes standardized tests as having "swelled and mutated, like a creature in one of those old horror movies to the point that it now threatens to swallow our school whole." Over the course of just 94 pages, Kohn writes a deftly crafted text, with chapter titles that in and of themselves provoke, such as, "Measuring What Matters Least," "The Worst Tests," and "Burnt at the High Stakes," just to name three of the six section titles. This book is a must read for every parent and educator. Kohn aptly sets the stage for his final section, entitled, "Fighting the Tests," a call to action by teachers, adminstrators, parents and students to resist in any way possible the onslaught of standardized testing and standards. Kohn, puts forth very concrete ways to resist current efforts that are being imposed by various government agencies throughout our country. Sixteen very specific strategies are delineated from just talking with friends and neighbors about inherent dangers of focusing on standardized test scores, to actually forming an organized boycott against having one's child or student take the exams. Kohn's provocative, yet extremely well researched and documented style should make the most zealous promoter of high standards and high stakes testing, sit up and take notice.

Power to the Resistance!

They ought to call this book "Why Standardized Tests are Dumb - for Dummies" and put it in one of those glaring yellow-and-black covers. Then maybe Alfie Kohn would become the household name he deserves to be! There is no more cogent explanation for the inequities of standrdized testing than that which is presented by Kohn in this slim, easy-to-read, practical, and VITAL volume. Early on Kohn points out that the arguement stating that standardized tests prepare students for the workplace is not only faulty, but riddled with ludicrously laughable "logic". After all, as he says, "How often are we forbidden to ask coworkers for help, or to depend on a larger organization for support...?" And, he goes on, "when someone is going to judge the quality of your work, whether you are a sculptor, a refrigerator repairman, a reporter, or a therapist, how common is it for you to be given a seret paper-and-pencil exam? Isn't it far more likely that the evaluator will look at examples of what you've already done, or perhaps watch you perform your normal tasks?" (p. 6) Kohn states in clear terms the basic inequalities of standardized tests, describes the dangers of "high stakes" testing schemes, links testing to the poor teaching that often infects the classrooms of our poorest children, and offers assessment alternatives that are both sane and authentic. Read this book before spring testing fever hits your school district -valuable for educators, parents, and students; vital for society.

Good book

I feel I'm not qualified to review this book. I'm just a regular guy, not a literature professor, but maybe my comments will be helpful to some. This book is really good. It's all about the characters. Many times while I was reading I wondered how all of this was going to end. It wasn't like a regular story where there's a pretty clear end goal, like get the bad guy, or solve the mystery. It was more like things are just happening and I wonder what's going to happen next. I thought maybe it's just going to stop abruptly, as if Tolstoy would just suddenly be done writing about all these characters, but it really did have a solid ending to conclude everything. Thinking back on the story I remember many ups and downs and tense moments and light hearted moments, it was very enjoyable and pretty easy to read.

One thing that really amazed me was how well Tolstoy could switch between different characters and settings. Everyone had distinct personalities and the way they were all portrayed was with so much compassion and understanding that as a reader I could really see parts of myself in everyone. There was no one character that I related to more than any other. I was able to relate to every single one of them differently. I believe this is the reason Tolstoy is considered a master.

The pace of the book is a little slow for me because I'm a slow reader, but in retrospect I feel like the pace was actually pretty good and it only felt slow because I had absolutely no idea where the story was going. Every chapter had something new happening and the story just strolled right along. Probably like riding a tractor for 50 miles. You've got plenty of time to look at all the flowers and clouds and barns and animals along the way, it takes forever, but it never stops moving.

It helped a lot to have this book on my kindle because towards the end there was more and more french that was easy to translate with the kindle. The port to the kindle was perfect. I saw no strange spacing or oddly misspelled words.

Overall I recommend giving this book a shot. Don't be discouraged by the length. I realize a reader may feel compelled to read this particular book just so they can say that they did. It's got that trophy book status. I feel like that's a bad thing though. If you find yourself a few hundred pages in and are interested in what's going on, then keep going. If however after a few hundred pages you feel like it's a chore to read, then don't bother, it's not going to suddenly become more interesting after any point in the book. It's very consistent, you can trust this author and the translation, the ending won't let you down, there will be no long lulls. What you get in the beginning is what you get through the entire book, it's very steady and very high quality writing.

The best book I've ever read

I get really excited when I read a really good book, and I just finished the most interesting, enthralling, and mesmerizing book I have ever read in my life, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. If ever you take a notion to read it, don't be put off by it's size or think it's a stuffy old classic written in the 1800s. The story is about the human condition in so many different aspects. This book has many characters, but it focuses on 3 couples in aristocratic Russia in the 1800s. In one couple the issue of continued infidelity by the husband is a question and the realization that the woman is just stuck forever in the situation. The other is a couple that find happiness, but realize life is not completely happy all the time and there's much introspection about life, and then there's the magnificent Anna Karenina that finds herself in a loveless marriage and is swept totally away by Count Vronsky. This is a situation where there is tragedy when sometimes people make choices in life and are not able to live with it. I just can't say enough about this book. All the characters you loved then disliked many times over. I could not wait to get back to it and I was sorry to see it end. I've never been moved so by a book and it is a tragic one. The famous first lines are: "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." And so it is.

I read the free Kindle version and had no problems with it whatsoever. I've read many complaints about different translations and that they were hard to follow. This is not true with this. I had no difficulty reading it at all.

The book is a magnificent piece of literature.

Best book I ever read

I have never enjoyed a book more than this one. From beginning to end, every part, every sentence, every word. It was surprisingly easy to read as well, although I suppose some credit should go to the translator for that aspect. The Russian names are a bit tricky, of course, i usually said them out loud to try and get them down. Actually I read most of the book aloud, just to slow me down and make sure I didn't miss anything, plus it sounds so good hearing the elegance of his writing. As a matter of fact, when I heard that they made this into a movie, my idea of the best way to appreciate this book in a movie was to have a microphone, a chair and and excellent reader just reading the words into the camera. Nothing else, because you don't NEED anything else.
If you looking for a thrilling story line with lots of twists and unexpected turns, this is probably not the book for you. I mean it's an interesting enough story, but it's involves things that happen all the time to ordinary people. What's so enjoyable is the way he DESCRIBES what's going on in each scene, each conversation, the thoughts and emotions of the characters as they deal with whatever unfolds in their lives. Especially I like he way he jumps around in his descriptions, what's going through her mind, what she says, what's her body language, what he sees, what he thinks, how it affects him, descriptions of the little physical clues to their feelings. He's moving around from character to character, from dialogue to thoughts to physical descriptions, and as you read, all of a sudden YOU'RE THERE! Actually you're more than there, because you see it from many different perspectives, and you just know exactly what they're feeling, thinking. It's really breathtaking is the best way to describe it as he's moving you around the scene seeing both the surface and deep into the character's thoughts and feelings. He even gets into the mind of the damn hunting dog, and after I got done rolling on the floor with laughter I got up and said "YES, YES, that's exactly how they think!"
This was my first Russian novel (other that something on Crime and Punishment years ago that I never finished and can't really recall) but it won't be my last, I'll read this again at least once, then will explore whatever else is out there. In fact the only down side to reading this book is that it may have ruined me for less compelling writers. Charles Dickens has always been one of my favorite writers, but I can't seem to get through David Copperfield all of a sudden...maybe happy people ARE all pretty much the same.
