About the Author
John Mastandrea teaches high school English and Religion in New Jersey, where he lives with his wife, Lydia and daughter, Sophia. The inspiration behind this story dates back to his early years with his grandparents in the Bronx. This is his first novel.

Promises to Keep:What a Journey!

Promises To Keep: What a Journey! (and I'm not even Italian) I just finished Promises To Keep in two sittings. I started last night and finished today. All I can say is, wow! Finally, a novel that we recent immigrants can relate to. This is a wonderful story. In the opening prologue, Michael Principe's grandparents remind me of my own, even though these people are Italian and I'm Dominican. They are old-world Italians, with funny customs and stories. They love their new country, but yet they distrust America and its "softening" values. The author, John Mastandrea, refers to this "softening" as being "Mediganz." We call it being a "Gringo", but I really knew what he was talking about. The story starts off with a young Michael Principe meeting Angela Lamendola at his grandparent's in the Bronx. At the end of that summer (1977) they make a very important promise to one another. But something terrible happens and they are separated. They don't meet again until later on. I won't say when and ruin the surprise, but this was my favorite part of the novel, filled with great sexual and romantic tension. I was really swept away by Michael and Angela's long-lost love affair. And how they take the values learned from Michael's grandparents and use them so smartly in the present day business world. It's Michael and Angela's latent romance that carries the story. And what a story it is, filled with plot twists and many of the issues one would read about in the news today, such as sex scandals in the workplace and corruption on Wall Street. When I finished this book I just sat there, dazed at the journey I had just experienced. I recommend Promises To Keep highly.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book about a young man who refuses to compromise his own values, passed down to him by his grandparents, in order to fit in with what is expected of him by colleagues and superiors at work. Michael Principe draws upon the strength of the old-world teachings he learned as a child spending summers with his grandparents, as well as a special friendship he developed with a girl in the apartment across the hall, as he challenges the political correctness and deep corruption in the Wall Street firm for which he works. Michael has promised eternal friendship to his childhood friend, and as an adult he promises to work to keep his company true to the values of its World-War-II-generation founder. Author Mastandrea links these two promises in sometimes surprising, but never implausible ways.
The contrast between the values Michael has learned from his grandparents and those held by the people in power at Ketcham & Co. could not be greater--yet Michael has gained not only values from his grandparents, but the strength of will necessary to keep them in situations where it would be very easy, and very tempting, to "sell out." Michael is an inspiring character and a believable one. His story is told with humor, and is well-crafted without being self-conscious.

From Fiction to True Culture

As a young Italian I was intrigued with reading Promises to Keep. The relation from character to reader was so amazing that fiction almost became reality. The intertwining between old traditional morals and present day culture deterioration is gracefully weaven. This novel left me in a pool of running emotions as every word had such great meaning, but what amazed me the most was the fact that suspense never left my side. As an Italian I can truly say that I am able to discern from "The Sopranos" to grandma's family dinners and this novel only reinforced that we are not only people of "Tony Sopranos" but people of family, respect and sacrifices. Promises to Keep, is a true enjoyable life altering book that I will never forget. I recommend that everyone with a strong sense of any culture take the time to read this novel because I can assure you that it will be time never forgotten.
