Dante had been courting his victim in cyberspace for weeks before meeting her in person. A few sips of wine and a few hours later, she was dead. The murder weapon: a rare, usually undetectable date-rape drug with a street value of a quarter million dollars.
Detective Eve Dallas is playing and replaying the clues in her mind. The candlelight, the music, the rose petals strewn across the beda seduction meant for his benefit, not hers. He hadn’t intended to kill her. But now that he had, he is left with only two choices: to either hole up in fear and guilt. Or start hunting again…

Amazon.com Review
New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts, writing as J.D. Robb, continues her prolific string of hits with her latest installment in the In Death series of futuristic thrillers starring hard-boiled detective Eve Dallas and a quirky cast of characters, including Eve's husband, Roarke, who owns most of Manhattan and can be relied upon to bring all his considerable resources to bear to help his wife solve the case whether she wants him to or not, and Peabody, Eve's uptight assistant, who has an off-again, on-again thing going with the irreverent Officer McNab. This time Eve is on the trail of a serial killer--or maybe killers--who stalks young women looking for love in online poetry chat rooms. Once a romantic date has been arranged, the murderer sets the scene with roses, champagne, and candlelight, then serves his unsuspecting victims a lethal combination of date-rape drugs that takes them to the height of pleasure and too far beyond. But this killer is really clever, altering his look to become each victim's dream date. What a nightmare! Detective Dallas is on the case, chasing an anonymous psychopath with a twisted taste in romance. But Eve seems a little more fragile this time around, still plagued by the nightmare of childhood abuse. Is retirement from the business of crime solving in the near future for Detective Dallas? Robb has found a winning formula in the genre, so hopefully we'll see a lot more of peppery Eve Dallas. --Alison Trinkle
From Publishers Weekly
In the 13th installment of Robb's (aka Nora Roberts) futuristic In Death series (after Betrayal in Death), New York's Lieutenant Eve Dallas takes on a Casanova killer who targets young women via on-line poetry chat rooms. The killer sets the mood for murder with rose petals, candlelight and expensive wine laced with a deadly date-rape drug. The novel opens (as others have in the past) with Eve reliving the horror of stabbing her abusive father to death. The narrative then switches to another grim scene that of a woman who has been pushed from a balcony. With the technology available in 2059, identifying the culprit should be simple, but this killer is more inventive than most: he becomes each victim's fantasy man. To make Eve's job even more difficult, a psychological profile indicates that there may be two killers or one with a multiple-personality disorder. Robb sprinkles her narrative with the usual supporting characters: Roarke, Eve's rich husband, uses his state-of-the-art computers to assist her with the case; Peabody, Eve's assistant, is still dancing a sexual tango with Officer McNab; and Roarke's lofty but caring butler remains a thorn in Eve's side. Although Robb's energetic prose and hard-edged dialogue will keep readers engrossed, this installment offers little that is new or fresh. (Sept. 4)Forecast: Thirteen may very well be Robb's unlucky number. Although the recent revelation that J.D. Robb is Nora Roberts will prompt many new readers to pick up the latest book in the series, Robb's long-time fans may find that this well is running dry.

Title pretty covers this one
By P. Shropshire
This series is as addictive as Zeus! In this book, #13 of the series, a woman falls from the upper floors of an apartment building right at the feet of Dr. Louise Dimatto. Eve had met her previously and had given her clinic a half million dollars from an account Roarke had set up in Eve's name.
Anyway, the investigation quickly shows that two men are slipping drugs to a date - drugs that make them sexually aroused and that lowers their normal inhibitions. Then the women are raped. The first time, the killer didn't actually intend to kill; he accidentally overdosed her, then threw her body off the balcony.
For the men - boys, really, just 22 years old - it's a game for points and bragging rights, which makes Eve angry and determined to take them down.
All the gang is here in this one. Charles Monroe and Dr. Dimatto hit it off. MacNab and Peabody settle their differences and agree to date exclusively. Eve gets rundown and sick before the case wraps up, so Roarke calls Summerset in to dose her with his special formulas. Of course she fights it and Roarke has to forcibly administer the meds - like a recalcitrant 2-year-old.
I love the mutual friendly/hostile relationship with Eve. They trade barbs because their personalities and egos won't allow them to admit to kindly feelings for each other.
Commander Whitney takes a personal, hands-on interest in the case, going into the field with Eve and her team.
And in the end, after both killers are disposed of, Eve and Roarke her off for a 2-week vacation in Mexico.
Some great dialogue as always. Eve and Peabody:
"Amused, Eve started the scan again. “I was single a hell of a lot longer than I’ve been married. I never stooped to cyber-world.”
"Big deal when you’re tall and thin with jungle-cat eyes and have a sexy little dent in your chin.”
"You coming onto me, Peabody?”
"My love for you is a fearsome thing, Dallas. But I’ve given up dating cops.”
********
Eve and Nadine:
"“You, Lieutenant Locked Lips, are going to, of your own free will and out of a sense of camaraderie, give me data on an ongoing investigation.”
"That’s right.”
"Just a minute.” Nadine’s face disappeared from the ’link screen for ten seconds. “Just wanted to check with the meteorologist. It appears, despite indications to the contrary, hell has not frozen over.”
"Pardon me while I fall into an uncontrollable fit of giggles. You want the data or not?”
*******
Roarke and MacNab
"Roarke leaned forward, gently patted McNab’s knee. “You’re in love with her.”
His jaw dropped. The beer in the pilsner slid dangerously toward the edge as it tipped. Roarke righted it. “I am?”
"I’m afraid so.”
McNab stared at Roarke with the expression of a man who’d just been told he had a fatal disease. “Well, hell.”
******
Eve and Peabody and MacNab
"“You don’t need to diet, She-Body. You are a just-right female.”
"McNab?” Eve said.
"Yes, sir.”
"Shut up.”
"It’s all right, Dallas. We’re a couple.”
"A couple of what? No, don’t tell me. Don’t talk to me. Don’t talk to each other. Let there be silence across the land.”
4.25 stars!

She's really excellent at this...
By L. Quido
Nora Roberts writes a paperback fiction series as "J.D.Robb". This, the 13th instalment, shows no signs of being stale, although in 13 books, the time element has moved in the series only about a year. Nora/JD is incredibly innovative in her mix of plotlines, and juggles the romance element (not my favorite part!) admirably with the suspense and police procedural elements
to keep readers interested and make her books hard to put down.
In this outing, Eve Dallas, tougher than ever, follows up on a series of brutal sex crimes/killings perpetrated by a man who meets his targets and seduces them online. All the familiar back up characters are here...I especially love the backdrop of Mavis and her entourage partying in the background while Dallas and Roarke are consumed by solving the crime. We get an end (a beginning?) here of the Peabody/McNab/Charles triangle, in a very satisfying way...and, once again, Nora/JD leaves some breadcrumbs for those who are thinking it is time for Dallas to start a family.
Just a great, light mystery series by a writer who is not always taken seriously, but who never fails to entertain! 5 stars as one of the best in the "In Death" series.
