The theory presented is linked to practical questions such as how to prevent broken yarns and reduce equipment downtime with an emphasis on ways to improve process design and achieve higher throughput. This technical book furnishes the calculations needed to understand and optimize a number of textile production processes, including texturing and warping.

About the Author
For Back Cover W. Barrie Fraser earned a BE (first class honors) and an ME in civil engineering, and a BS in Mathematics from the University of Canterbury (formerly the University of New Zealand) between 1960 and 1962. Recipient of a Fulbright travel grant and Frank Knox Memorial Fellowship, he earned an SM in 1962 and a PhD in Applied Physics in 1965 from Harvard University. He joined the department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney in 1965. In 1999, he retired as an Honorary Senior Lecturer. In addition to teaching, he maintained an active research program, even after retirement. His research encompassed wave propagation in structures and modeling textile processes, among others. During his career, including his retirement years, he held many visiting appointments at universities in the United Kingdom, Israel, and the United States. These appointments yielded numerous collaborations reflected in nearly seventy publications. He passed away on November 9, 2013, in Sydney, Australia. Subhash K. Batra was educated at Delhi University (undergraduate studies), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (SM-ME, SM-Mgmt), and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (PhD in Mechanics). His career path includes Battelle Memorial Institute, MIT, and North Carolina State University (NCSU). Before retiring in 2008, he was the Charles A. Cannon Professor and founding director (1990-1999) of the Nonwovens Cooperative Research Center, an NSF, State, I/UCRC. Apart from teaching and research at NCSU, he was involved in the professional organizations ASME, INDA TAB, and the Fiber Society, among others. Recognition of his contributions include Fellow of ASME, Honorary Member of the Fiber Society, Harold DeWitt Smith Medal, an award of ASTM, an Honorary Doctorate from the Technical University of Liberec, and Sloan Industry Fellow at Harvard University. His research focus included structural mechanics of fibers, fabrics including nonwovens, and modeling machine material interactions in textile processes. His retirement activities include promoting the engineering with fibers book series (with Professors Pourdeyhimi and Jaffe), assisting industry in teaching and consultative capacities, and gardening.
